My dad would use them to batter a big batch of fried chicken.
But, seriously, we used them for everything. Crafts, storage, trash, dozens of uses.

Trash
Wrapping stuff for the freezer.
Putting fish, hush puppies and fries in when we had a fish fry.
Pretty much what you use plastic bags for now.
Mom always folded and kept them.

We had a drawer in our kitchen solely for paper bags. All types of sizes from the grocery store size to the quart liquor size. For battering food and soaking up the grease from food was the main use. For putting clothes in for an overnight stay with friends. Halloween bag for candy. Starting various fires. Overall storage device. Trash. Miss em, part of growing up in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Remember when plastic was coming out and towns with paper mills were pissed.
