I am taking the kids to 21 and 16 to Washington Dc the first week of June. My parents are going as well, which is something me and dad have been wanting to do for some time.

We will be in DC for 5 days and will hit up the popular sites.
What are some recommendations that are a must?
What places are a must to eat at?

Any tips?

Mt Vernon is one of my favorites.
Arlington Cemetary
Holocaust Museum

Sightseeing alone will take up most of your five days and a lot of times it's just easier to grab food on the go depending on where you are at.

For some sit down meals, the Georgetown area has some decent spots.

National Mall can be done in a half day.

If there's a home O's game take a trip up to Baltimore. The area surrounding Camden is a good time.

This is a link to our recent trip to DC, it is mostly about the Cherry Blossom Festival but other info is there.

DC Trip Report

We ate lunch in Alexandria and there are quite a few restaurants to pick from.

Just be prepared to walk a lot and figure out the METRO train and bus system quickly. That can save you time.

We had been there before and in 5 days you can see most if not all the major sites; just have a plan.

Are you staying in town or out in the suburbs?

Staying in town. Few blocks from everything.

Eating on the run will be most of our style I would think. But I’m sure there will be a day we want to sit a while and enjoy a meal. Nothing fancy though. Will be walking all day and will be looking for a spot to relax and eat

I'm all about trains, but the metro there is not good and its expensive. Uber or taxi, its well worth it.

Definitely the Smithsonian Air and Space and Natural History museums. I somehow knocked out both of those in one day. I don't think that's possible with a family in tow so I would do those on separate days. Also the Postal Museum was pretty cool.

The Library of Congress was good as well.

And if you hadn't already I would try to set up a Capitol tour with one of the legislators. I did mine through Bill Cassidy's office and his staff was awesome. You're going during the summer too like I did so they won't have much going on so they'll be more than happy to get out of the office.

I signed up for was unable to get a White House tour.

The tours are all booked. Would have really liked to go in the White House

Air and space museum is top museum for us. My dad retired from Lockheed and is a space fanatic.

I was a little disappointed when we went because I picked out a couple of good places that were on/near the GWU campus. School wasn’t in session so the restaurants were closed. Check before you go.

You’ll get lots of the same recommendations in this thread so here’s a couple of odd ones:

A fun dessert place for my kids (a little younger than yours) was Captain Cookie and the Milkmen. If you want a unique experience, get breakfast at Lincoln’s Waffles right across the street from Ford’s Theatre. Nothing special but the people watching was fun. My kids said the bathroom was the filthiest they’ve ever seen but we still talk and laugh about it.

Stay in Alexandria VA. There is a hotel really close to the metro. You can take the metro to DC in the morning, see the sights, and have a good time in Alexandria at night. They have some really nice restaurants, bars, shopping, etc.

***Nevermind. I see you already have a place. That being said, I really love Alexandria at night.

I thought the metro was great, clean, and not too expensive. But the only thing I have to compare it to is the NYC subway which is horrible.

The Holocaust Museum is beyond words. But you need a ticket to see the permanent exhibit (which is pretty much the whole thing) which you can get online for $1 each. Unfortunately, it looks like the first week of June is sold out except for maybe that Friday.

That’s an advantage but I would quickly figure out how the trains/buses work. The train we rode was clean, nice even, and the cost is based on how far you travel.

It is 2.2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Bldg. - to give you a frame of reference. If your hotel is near a Metro or bus stop the public transportation may come in handy.

You mentioned the Air & Space Museum; there is another one at the airport (Dulles I think) that is said to be very good but I have not been.

The Air and Space museum annex out by Dulles is better than the main Air and Space IMO. Getting there is the trick. Take Silver line of Metro to its currenf terminus and then a city bus ride direct to annex. I did that, but then I enjoy public transportation. The Annex has a USAF Lockheed Constellation. Plus a Concorde, the Enola Gay, and a space shuttle.

Btw, knocking the metro service in DC is silly—it’s a great way to get around DC

Compared to places like Chicago, Paris, london, etc. the DC metro is not good I’m sorry. You guys need to get out more if you think it’s good. They constantly have financial problems. Once you are anywhere close to the mall area, for a family of 3-5 uber’s Generally make much more sense.

From the Embassy Suites to the airport was $1.50 more for me to uber then metro which is across the street and a handful of stops away from the airport and direct.

It is not horrendous and I’m not saying don’t use it, I’m simply saying that it’s not amazing and you can save a ton of time by ubering/ cabbing around the mall area for pretty cheap.

DC metro is fine. It’s cleaner than NY, more modern and accessible than Paris, and not as effing crowded as London. Surface traffic in DC can be stupid, at rush hour especially. Metro will get you where you need to go, efficiently. And your feet: DC is a very walkable city.

The Nationals stadium and surrounding Navy Yard area is nice, if you want to take in a baseball game.

Best mall area museum food is at the Native American museum. Air and Space is next door, and it has kiddie food and a McDonalds. It’s worth going inside NA just to eat, if you’re in the mall area looking for food.

If you are flying in or out of Dulles, don’t miss the Udvar Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles, much better than the one on the National Mall. Eat at Carmine’s Italian Restaurant, trust me.

I’m old so Uber is not the first option I think of. Perhaps Uber is a better (cheaper/more efficient) way to move 6 people around DC; don’t know.

I do know after a long day of walking and you’re miles from your hotel some type of public transportation is a blessing.

Crawdaddy, where are you staying? In Penn Quarter area (near Spy Museum and National Portrait Gallery), I like Ella's Pizza for a bite to eat. They have a good happy hour menu, too.

The Circulator buses (red) are free now, and the buses come every 10 minutes.

I second the recommendation to go to Udvar-Hazy out near Dulles. It has the Concorde, Space Shuttle, WWII planes... You will see many more planes there than at the Air and Space Museum, which is also cool only smaller. There's a McDonald's onsite; otherwise, plan to eat before or after.

The Wharf is the latest happening area in DC and can be reached via the Waterfront Metro Station. Lots of restaurants and events.

Rosslyn, near Iwo Jima, has an observation deck 31 stories up. Check for deals. While it is a nice 380 degree view, it is not worth full price.

Lastly, the nighttime Trolley tour is a great way to see the Monuments. The Korean Memorial is even more striking at night.
