Buying 8yo a console for birthday. I know nothing about them and he’s just getting interested. Plays fort nite and likes sports games. Looking for guidance.

PS4 has the better exclusives
Xbox has game pass
I would’ve said the switch until you said sports games

Wouldn't matter for an 8 yr old.

This might because you'll have a good bit to choose fun. OP, think Netflix for video games.
I'd say switch as well, but know that Nintendo doesn't discount their games, so you'll pay a good bit more for games than on the other consoles. Also, all of their accessories are expensive.

How does GamePass work? Does it have to download to the console and take up memory?

I don't have an xbox, but I'd imagine you download what you want to play, if you run out of room, delete something.
PS4 has a game streaming service that used to not work well at all. Sound would be wonky and there would be latency issues. I think they are letting people download now, though.

I see people today talk about Gamepass and how awesome it is and it still stuns me how far ahead of its time the Sega Channel was when it came out in 1994.

Correct, I was just naming the primary selling point of each
For an 8 year old, if we are excluding the switch due to small number of sports titles, I’d go with the Xbox with game pass. He can play plenty of sports titles and he can casually dip his toe into trying a lot of different games to see what he likes at a very convenient price.

And X Band.

If you're looking for the cheaper option, so XB1 and gamepass. He can get loads of games on there for $10 a month.
Heads up though - new generation of consoles are likely coming out Fall 2020.
If money isn't an issue your son doesn't game online with friends, I'd recommend a Switch. Games are more expensive, but they're more geared toward a younger crowd, and fortnite is on there as well.
