DU Northerners heating ponds to screw over Louisiana Duck Hunters

Someone told me yesterday that DU is in a massive conspiracy with northern farmers in regards to heating ponds to keep more ducks up north for the winter.
The logistics of this would be astronomical, not to mention the cost. After some google searches I only found discussion board posts. Heating enough water to affect the migratory pattern of 50 million ducks would seem pretty steep.
Does anyone think this is even remotely possible? I had an awful duck season this year, but I chalked it up to weather and way too much water. Is the DU really involved in a conspiracy to fook over us LA duck hunting brethren?

you really think heating ponds on a large scale is even feasible?
Posted on 3/22/19 at 7:52 am to hubertcumberdale
The whole heated pond debate is stupid. Honestly, I think that duck populations are just way down and have been going down since the early 2000’s and DU and Delta doesn’t want to admit this. Down numbers=less money

They're not using heaters, ice eaters are essentially a boat prop that churns the warmer water located below the surface, to the surface and moving water is harder to freeze, they can't even get that part right.
Flyway Federation doesn't even understand pond heaters, but have convinced enough people that they're ahead of the curve on why the duck hunting isn't like it used to be in the 70s

No I think it is not possible, but wanted to hear from someone who thought it was

I know multiple people that use Ice Eaters in the midwest, but the idea that's having any sort of drastic effect is laughable.
I've said this on here many times, what causes the waterfowl to stay in the midwest is the industrial outcharge from cooling the factories and powerplants. Most of those are not hunted.
If you are using an ice eater you are hunting it. How many ducks is a swimming pool that is hunted holding?

that would be a bigger conspiracy than heating some ponds
DU and Delta dont do the counts, the feds do
so the feds would have to be kin collusion with delta and DU to inflate numbers for your theory to be correct

No one except idiots use the "heated pond" comment. But yes there is and has been large scale "ice eaters", pumps, agitators, etc... and so forth put in by and with DU money to keep water open for waterfowl in Northern states. This is well documented and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. What is up for debate is how much effect in the overall sense of the migration it really has. Is it "short stopping" in general sence of the word. NO. Is it slowing the migration of ducks YES but on what and how grand of a scale? That is up for debate. As well as flooding crops in those states and keeping water open. These are real issues on the delay/slowdown/"hot cropping" of the migration. Yes it has caused a very noticeable change to the migration patterns of many ducks up and down the flyway to people that have been doing this for 40+ years. Those that have only been in the game since late 90's and 2000's really cannot relate to the issue as well. But we all just need to drop the DU vernacular "heated ponds" it kinda defines you as a person when you refer to it.

you think the industrial heat discharge is holding ducks? Which plants aren't getting hunted?

Do you have a source? Kind of interested to know the logistics

I want to see where DU or Delta has purchased anyone ice eaters. People in Louisiana and the south in general believe the dumbest stuff. I have hunted all over the US and Canada for ducks. I have seen ducks in the strangest places. You know why? They aren't getting shot at or bothered. Come to Louisiana and tell me where a duck is safe from being disturbed

Yet you use this term...

"hot cropping"

34 Venture, No sir, As you can see I used quotation marks. Meaning they are someone else's words that I referenced in probable definition of a situation that everyone refers to differently. But yes I assume in a short time "hot cropping" will probably be as damned as "heated ponds".

It is impossible to even begin to think about heating water on such a scale. Would be much cheaper to trap ducks and geese in the North, fly them down to Louisiana, and release them. Much much cheaper.

Fair enough. Still, bottom line is guys flooding some corn up north and or moving some water to keep a few acres open is not holding the freaking ducks from coming to Louisiana.

"Combine all the factors said and unsaid that can, do and could affect the migration of Canada geese in and through Illinois, and you find the vast majority of the region's Canadas now winter in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. By January, a small portion of those birds might move into the extreme northern tier of the Central Zone, but the only significant concentrations of Canadas in Illinois are found at a few large, open-water sites near Peoria. Most prominent among these are the power plant cooling lake operated by Central Illinois Light Company (CILCO) and the Chicago Metropolitan Sanitary District ponds."

Its not just Louisiana, you guys are just at the end of the flyway. Its shifting everywhere.
