great strategy...damn....

Max was a sitting duck. Hate to see HAM win but what an excellent strategy Mercedes had with that 2nd pit stop

Caught the first 20 laps or so then switched to soccer. Assuming not a very exciting race save for Mercedes pit strategy?

It wasn't strategy, it was a tactical decision Mercedes made given the circumstances, and Red Bull had one lap's worth of time to respond, and they made the wrong decision. Max wanted to pit, and that would have given him a better chance to fight.

True.

As the announcers remind us, Mercedes were able to make the decision to pit because Hamilton had a big enough gap to P3 that he could pit and stay in P2. If he didn't have that gap, Mercedes might not have done it. It just worked out perfect for them.

Yeah, it’s disappointing that so many cars finish a lap down. That’s the thing that F1 needs to figure out.

Horner insists they made the best decision to give Max a chance. He could be right, Hamilton just had better overall pace today.

I was amazed with how much a gap 3rd place and back was compared to HAM and Max. It was like that the whole race. I wonder how the race would’ve turned out if Bottas didn’t have to pit early.

That's a really good point. Since Mercedes allows their drivers to race, if Bottas was close enough in P3, Mercedes might not have taken the risk of pitting. Or, given the circumstances, they might have done it and invoked team orders to let Hamilton past.
Bottas made the decision much easier by not being where he was supposed to be.

Ferrari need to understand that they are racing Red Bull, not Mercedes.
Correction: McLaren, not Red Bull.

He's right.
Max would have had to put on softs to have a chance at passing Hamilton after his 2nd stop. Max may have been able to pass, but Hamilton would have come right back in the final laps when those softs fell away after being driven at attacking pace for 15+ laps.
Just the way the race shook out. At that point in the race, there was nothing RB could do except hope for some sort of frick up from Mercedes. Hamilton was just too quick today. We know how shitty these cars perform when they are within a second or two of the car ahead. For Hamilton to be able to hang with Max for so many laps just shows that Hamilton was quite a bit faster today.

Gasly isn’t helping.
A strong 2nd car could help Max.

Max and Lewis are clearly on another level than everybody else right now. Unfortunately don't think next 2 races at Spa & Monza will be strong circuits for the Red Bull.

That was a race where two F1 cars showed what they could do. Wish they all ran that pace rather than conserving $$$ to make it to the next race.

Craziness when Hamilton was like 3 or 4 seconds back and then was on Max's gearbox in less than a lap. He was really flying today.
This race was a really stellar drive by Hamilton today. There were at least 2 moments when I thought "Well this race turned out shitty, Max is going to run away with it" only for Hamilton to be within striking distance 2 or 3 laps later.

Listening to the radio Max knew he was a sitting duck once Ham got fresh rubber

Just as the racing is getting good, it's summer break!
We have to wait four weeks until the next race at Spa!
Eau Rouge | Onboards (1987 - 2018)
Man the sound suddenly went to crap in 2014! Damn turbos, we want buzzin' hornets!
