Since hard rock has devolved to plain old rock in this thread, (seriously, The Doors, REM hard rock?) in no particular order....
The Ramones
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Grateful Dead
Velvet Underground
The Beach Boys
Those are the most influential. If you want the best five that is another list.

If we're talking about American bands influencing hard rock, it's foolish not to include Blue Oyster Cult.

Bingo. Their catalogue is huge and they are definitely under appreciated by the masses. One of my favorites

Is not what I think of when I think of Aerosmith and Van Halen or KISS for that matter

Waiting for another American band to base their roots around this bands sound.
Until then I'll stay in the Nordics and Italia for my rock/metal

The New York Dolls influenced the punk rock movement and the look of every 80s hair band.

How has no one said Soundgarden?
Do we have to date ourselves to make this list?
If you grew up in the 70s I understand Van Halen others mentioned( UK owned this time)
The 80s Metallica or Slayer
The 90s(my teenage years) Ill stick with this as my INFULENTIAL base
Again Soundgarden jumps right out.
Alice In Chains
TOOL
Pantera
Kyuss
If ^ isnt hard rock then kindly gfy

I have trouble taking Van Halen seriously as a hard rock ban
I've yet to catch any of my kids, nor any of my kids' friends, jamming out to some Van Halen. They're a complete afterthought to anyone born after 1980. This is not what you'd expect from one of the top 5 influential American hard rock bands. They don't even come close to making the list.

Today's kids wouldn't have any clue what good hard rock music from the 70's and 80's was unless good parenting was involved. Also I like Pearl Jam, guess I'm just too old to think they've influenced many other successful bands. That 90's list posted earlier also consisted of good bands. Guess my old arse was just thinking 70's and 80's bands that have influenced bands of the past 20 years.

I misread the title when I suggested R.E.M.
I find reading comprehension difficult.

Sadly the bands Pearl Jam influences are Creed, Nickleback, etc. early STP even sounds a good bit like PJ.
