I'm no old school rock historian, but wasn't Judas Priest doing Metallica and Pantera well before Metallica and Pantera were? Kind of surprised I hadn't seen them mentioned, but maybe that's for a reason.

Judas Priest started in the late 70s and are a huge influence on Slayer and Pantera. They are a big influence on thrash as a whole but there's other bands like Diamond Head and Budgie that never made it big but influenced the genre as well.
