So she bought a 2005 Saturn Ion last year from a woman at her church.

She paid $500 for her car.

"And I was surprised it actually worked," she said. "But I had to learn how to drive a stick shift."

Good for her. Most millenials would just give up.

The whole "go to college or else" system needs to be burned to the ground.

Such a false narrative being pushed by school guidance counselors (themselves in massive debt) that the only way to succeed is college.

Hopefully Mike Rowe can continue to make progress with his message.

She eats out maybe once a month. She limits her driving to control how much she spends on gas. She lives in an apartment. She avoids getting her nails done or shopping. She buys clothes about two times a year.

OMG, she has to live on a budget!

Kids need to stop blowing money on useless history of women’s underwater dance degrees and start looking more into trade jobs. Mike Rowe has it right. We’re at the point where people that are good with their hands can get paid much more than someone with a BS B.S.

bingo. nothing will change if they don't start pushing back on the "attend college or else" narrative.

If that wasn't bad enough....

Well her undergrad degree is worthless, maybe she'll take a different route the second time around?

Most kids attend college and don't rack up that kind of debt.

i'm sure she will start the gofundme page to get started on going to graduate school. how do you rack up 90,000 in debit at hampton University for a art degree. Do you not even look at what your signing? i give her credit for doing the right thing to pay it off but finding a job with that degree wont be easy.

I bet she has a better grasp at punctuation than you do.

I don't know why people here are so quick to blame the students instead of the system. We learned all growing up that after high school, you go to college, and then get a job. It's so engrained into society that for most, there is no other choice.

The entire high school process is geared toward getting into college. Your GPA, test scores, electives, extra curricular activities, etc are all to get into college.

At no point along the way did anyone come to us and say "hey, you can also learn a trade, skip college, and have a great career!"
