absolutely went off on the Rams in Week 1 as well.
9 catches for 180 yards

Yes I suppose that’s true. I agree without Watson we’re in a bad spot. I guess I just was thinking more about moving the needle over last year’s squad, which it won’t, but should replace Watson well. Slightly younger.

Cook> Watson from last year. That’s not even close

I strongly disagree. If he could have gotten that kind of money, he would have already signed by now.

Jimmy graham got 3/30 last year, same age.
First of all, Graham had a MASSIVELY better career than Cook before he signed. I get that Graham had more injury issues, but come on.
Second, you have to look at contending teams that have a need at TE. The Packers needed a TE and were contenders. They generally have solid cap space since they rarely are big FA spenders (until this year when they went nuts). What other teams fit the bill this season?
Let's look at SB odds:
KC 6/1
LAR, NO, NE 8/1
LAC, Chi, Pit 14/1
Min, GB, Dal 16/1
Phi, Bal, Ind, Cle, Hou 20/1
KC, Philly: frick no.
Vikes, Balt, Indy, Cleveland, Chargers: No.
Rams: Need a TE, but with Kupp as an elite slot guy and good outside WR options, it's not a priority.
NE: Who knows. They may not know until week 1, when a PI finds Gronk either working out nearby, or fricking 20 year old Columbian triplets on some island.
Chicago: Burton is pretty legit.
That leaves Pit and Dallas as iffy. I think the Steelers are clearly transitioning (despite Ben sticking around) and have little use for an older TE that will help them win in 2019/20, but not much beyond. Dallas are a legit semi-contender that needs one. That's all I've got.
What I'm getting at, is that first of all, most contenders are set at the TE position. Second, most non-contenders (even those with a ton of money) have little reason to sign a 32 year old TE that will fall off by the time it matters.
ETA: My prediction = 3/$17m

I’m not sure I agree. He’s good but not great.

Dear Cook and Tate - Come win a ship next year, we just ask for a reasonable salary request in exchange for a ring.

ah shite he is almost about turn 32?
crap.
but at least he's stayed healthy for the most part.
says in his season log on profootball reference the number of games he's played in is pretty high.
the fewest amount of games in a season for him was 10 for the Packers in 2016.

But he will get most of that guaranteed

Cook will get at least 2 years $16 million with most guaranteed. That’s a lot of scratch.

Brees is going to hit cook on that seam route like it's going out of style.
Cook is 32 but runs like a gazelle.
We need to sign him and also double up in the draft.
Cleaner set them years back at the tight end position.
Should have never let Ben Watson leave the first time and drafted someone then

It's rare for TEs to blossom this late, but it's not uncommon for TEs to perform well between 32-35.
At 32y/o & 35y/o:
Gonzo: 1050/10 & 870/7
Gates: 540/7 (15 games) & 630/5 (11 games)
Watson: 500/3 (14 games) & 830/6
I know that those are all-time great TEs, but there aren't many players at the position that kill it at 32 years old. If they play well at that age, they don't really fall off. Cook doesn't really have a comparable player that I can think of, but odds are that aging won't affect him too much over the next 3 seasons. I can see him putting up 700/5 over that 3 or 4 season stretch.

CJ Uzomah and Tyler Kraft both just got 3/18 each.
They average 13 & 17 yards per game respectively on their careers.

Jimmy Graham post-Saints has basically been Jared Cook.
Tight ends age well. More than just "contenders" will bid. Not sure where that narrative comes from. The Raiders want him back, for instance.

At the start of FA, from two of the worst teams in the league. The cost of any player almost always drops significantly after the first few days of FA. And that's not necessarily because teams run out of money, but because front offices are better gauges of value than us layfolk and critics are.

Maybe a team with a shite-ton of money will just say "frick it, why not". But if you ran a team that wasn't competing anytime soon, why would you spend big bucks for a guy that will probably suck in ~3 years?

I ignored them due to the odds. With their FA additions, it would make sense for both the Raiders and for Cook. The Raiders aren't "contenders", but they probably won't be a shitshow. Personally, I would never play in California with their taxes, and I would never play for Davis with his haircut. I'm petty though.
**ETA: And I just looked up Uzomah (who sucks) and Kroft (who sucks). As I said, both were signed by shitted teams/front offices. On top of that, both are 26. Those contracts are both straight up "We suck and have a ton of cap space, let's sign a younger guy with potential" deals.

I just don’t see a world where he’s only worth 5.6 annually.
3 years is gonna cost you $7mil per at least. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think I will be

Idk, there have been many TEs already signed.
Those remaining might face a cooled market like Ingram did.

I could see him signing for something like 3/$21m, playing for 2 seasons and getting cut, and ending up making 2/$12m in actual money.
That can be my final prediction that won't be verifiable for another 2.5 years: 2 years, $12m. He won't sign a 2/12 contract, but that's what he'll make. Saints will probably be paying him $5m in 2021 #LOOMISING
