Looking to pull the trigger on a new troll motor with spot lock and the motorguide gets good reviews and is cheaper than the MinnKota. What say the OB?

Curious as well.

I’ve always been a minnkota guy myself.

i have one and its about 3 years old. it holds great while snapper fishing or inshore. no issues. My only knock on it is that it would be nice for the remote to have a led screen but no big deal

I had a xi5 before my ultrex. The ultrex is hands down a better motor. The cable steer is more responsive and you can tell where the motor is pointed based on the pedal position unlike the electric xi5. The xi5 can turn forever and if you don't watch it the external xducer cable can snap. The xi5 pedal would not power down correctly and I would have to put new batteries in the pedal every trip.

Feel free to ask me any questions, and I will do my best to help.

Thanks for the info. This will be remote hand control for salt water use. My main question is durability.

Mine is the saltwater version and don't have any of those issues.

Never used the motor guide but I have a terrova with spot lock. It's a true game changer. The I pilot has been the biggest improvement to my fishing experience since GPS.

Spend the extra on the Minn Kota. You won’t be sorry!

Hold your horses Motorguide and lowrance are both coming out with new trolling motors to compete with the Ultrex. It will be announced this weekend at the Expo

I can't comment in regards to durability, but I will say after fishing with a buddy who has the xi5 it is now top on my list to purchase next for my boat. Throwing an anchor seems obsolete and dumb after fishing with one of these. I've been shopping around for a while looking for the best price but $1600-1700 seems to be about right for a 24v

Call the repair shops and ask them if the bugs have been worked out. MK had many units that didn’t make the cut but that’s typical with new product introductions.

I bought my Xi5 2.5 years ago after only having Minn Kota's prior. In the saltwater remote control version the Motorguide is better. It holds tighter than the I pilot even after Minn Kota made the I pilot better in late 2016. I've had zero problem out of mine and would buy another before i bought the I pilot just because of the tighter holding in anchor mode. Both are good motors and better than the hand control type. The only downside to the motorguide i've been told is the parts take longer to get (this was when i bought mine) but i haven't had to worry about that yet.

MG is significantly improved from their offering years ago, so much that several guides have switched recently on the lake. Buddy has an i pilot in his garage that needs a second or third mother board ($300). I am running a first gen i pilot that has been flauxless and i am the second owner but when it dies i may go MG depending on the discount. MG's only drawback is support network.
