Thanks for the info. I’m no expert whatsoever. I’m just relaying info I heard at the office from people that are talking to people involved with the company they were flying for.

I heard the opposite. That blades were spinning when he hit. But I doubt anybody jumped. Ejected thru the canopy on impact, very possible.

Sad for the 2 guys families that lost loved ones today. On another note man I have a serious itch for a helicopter and somewhat of a need enough to justify it. What’s the truth are they really that dangerous? Any serious advice from those with experience?

No. There is over 1 million flights offshore a year. The number of flights that have to make emergency landings or go down is less than 10. 6 in the last 10 years. You have nothing to worry about.

A helicopter will impact the water pretty damn hard. And if the engine goes out at altitude, everyone on board is a goner.

Not true. We went down in a 206 in Ship Shoal. We auto rotated from 1200 feet and landed on the floats. Luckily we didn't roll and stayed upright. We were able to stay in the helicopter for almost an hour before a rescue boat showed up.

I agree WX could have been a factor. Hopefully he didn’t get in fog or IMC conditions.

Unfortunately this is what had probably happened. I've been stuck offshore trying to crew change for a 2 days now. No visibility due to fog and its been like this for a week.

Honestly; it happened so fast I didn't really have time to think about it. We didn't start freaking out until we were in the water with the blades stopped.
