This is something I don’t understand

Isn’t rookie minimum over 800k?

Would a college really pay 1 kid that much money?
What happens when you have to pay that to 2 or 3 kids?

It seems unrealistic to me, maybe I’m naive

Does above rookie minimum include endorsements paid to the NBA player? If Smart is a good player and is drafted highly he would make more than rookie minimum through endorsements.

It may be hearsay, but if there is something really damaging on the tape WW knows it's there. He knows it will eventually come out and it will not be hearsay when it does.

I am hoping, like everybody else, the 'Smart' chatter is the worst of it.

could very well be a tongue-in-cheek comment because, no, I do not see anyone paying any recruit that kind of money unless they're a generational talent. Smart doesn't exactly fit the bill there.

What? The whole conversation is on tape. Make WW squirm? WW was there! He knows exactly what is on tape! He knows if he is guilty. He knows if he is being framed.

Wasn't the Deandre Ayton offer like $100,000?

No way Smart is getting 8x that

The whole NBA rookie minimum comment was obviously a joke. For all we know the whole phone call was.

The issue that the OP points out is that we are going off of snippets of a conversation that none of us have heard. Even worse, only a portion was leaked, AND THEN only a portion was written about.

So this is hearsay, multiple times over. Could it be true? Of course, but until that time, these types of things cannot be based on media reports.

Last year the ESPN report that Sean Miller was suspended over, was deemed false a few days later with multiple factual errors and mischaracterizations.

You don't need money changing hands. See Rule 13.2.1. If WW offered the the money, even just to the handler, it is a violation. Therefore, just because Smart is eligible does not mean WW did not commit a violation.

You don't even have a basic understanding of what's going on here. The FBI has zero interest in Wade.

Other than being a "bystander" talking on the tape, he is not part of the investigation. The FBI isn't even slightly interested in Wade.

Wade says "this smart thing". Yahoo capitalized Smart to make it seem a proper noun but that's pure conjecture on their part. How do you know Wade and Dawkins weren't joking about how much Duke was paying Zion Williamson?

Wait... Wade was suspended for refusing to meet with the NCAA present, NOT because of what's on the tape.

Or that's what LE and the admin in their official announcement want me to believe.

I can't resist... you do know that by NCAA NLI rules any letter of intent MUST be accompanied by an "offer" of financial aid, correct? I mean we all know what he's saying, but if we're going to parse words let's do it in a way that helps us, not hurts us.

The FBI (DOJ really) wants to keep Wade off the stand and doesn't want the defense using any of those tapes that he is one. Not only are they not interested in him, they don't want him anywhere near this if they can help it.

Random Idea:

LSU should increase the athletic stipend today.

Then we could claim the "strong offer" was that increase!

Here is my take on it, now understand I don’t have a dog in the flight. Common since would tell how easy it is to get out of situation. The comments about “the smart deal”, wade knew Dawkins wasn’t part of Smarts recruitment so Dawkins had know clue as to what the deal LSU made. Wade was probing to see what it would take to get whom ever Dawkins was working, wade wanted to see what it was going to take. The fake news media likes to take snippets and blow them out of proportion. LSU AD and President have stumbled all over their feet once more and made a situation worst. Instead of the three getting together working things out LSU AD runs to the NCAA trying CYA and now the NCAA wants to be apart of any meeting with Wade. Wade’s lawyer smelt a ambush and said not to talk them without him. I call tell you, good luck of ever getting a decent coach to come to LSU. The administration doesn’t back the coach, who would want to work in that kind of environment.
