I’ve bought and sold several vehicles on CL over the past 10 years or so, but something new just came to my attention.

I have my F150 listed for sale. I’ve been getting 1-2 inquiries per day for the last week. Interestingly, I have had a couple of requests to provide some vehicle reports from unfamiliar sources. Also, these potential buyers immediately started making plans to come see the truck without asking any questions. One even stated he needed the report in a hurry so he could take the day off from work...he claims to be only 30 miles away, but needed a day of PTO to come check it out.

Here’s one of the text inquiries...
Buyer:
Im 30 minutes away is it possible to meet tomorrow? would like to come down to your place and make a deal if all is well. Cash, cashier check or we go to my bank (BofA) however you wish

Me:
Sure. Does the afternoon work?

Buyer:
Alright we can meet at 5 pm.. I will take a day off from work. Anyway could you send me the AHT report now?

Me:
Aht report?

Buyer:
Its the report which you as the owner can pull online autohistorytools.com by the way I am Jeff.. can I get your name?
I'm at work i'm waiting for you to send me the AHT report so I can take time off work before I leave today.

Me:
Never heard of an AHT report.

Buyer:
its a report that shows accidents recalls mileage information service records insurance and auction records with over 60 other checks so nothing in specific but the complete history is what I am after since we arent talking a small sum of money here. It will show up to date data from DMV which is what i need to see before i make commitments to take time off work and pay someone to drive me down

Me:
Why would you need to take a day off to ride 30 miles to see a truck?
I won’t be sending that report.

After some digging, I found that the BBB has this scam listed.

The buyer gets the seller to go to a site where they will be charged AND asked to enter a bunch of potentially harmful information.

Be safe out there, baws.

I recently sold a truck on craigslist. Everything went pretty well. I sold it cheap, so it sold cash within a few hours of posting it online.

Anyway, guy gets their hands me the cash and it’s short 20 bucks. I ask him about it and he says they had to get gas to get over there. LOL.

CL is full of degenerates.

good that you caught the scam.

I will say, you did trigger me with taking a day off work comment.

Twice recently, I’ve had to take a day off work todo something. Because timing would have been too messy.

Yeah if it’s a 30 minute drive then it’s a 30 minute drive back plus the time to actually talk about the truck etc I would probably take a half day atleast

Same. I've sold and bought bikes in the 1200-2000 dollar range without issue several times. Usually relatively good deals for me in both directions too. Just careful when I meet with people and don't do anything crazy that they request.

I sold a motorcycle to an old hippie who showed up a few dollars short because they had to fund the trip. He literally emptied his pockets on the hood of a truck, and I took every nickel, penny, etc. he had.

I used to flip used mattresses on Craigslist all the time without a problem. By flip I mean I would purchase used mattresses at garage sales, etc and then sell on CL. You'd be surprised how much profit you can make if you know how to get stains out.

I had a potential buyer of a truck I was selling ask me if I would deduct from my asking price his time spent away from work. He was serious and when I told him he was wasting my time with his nonsense, he then pulled a notepad and began noting every little pit, ding and scratch with a dollar figure next to it. I told I was done with him and to move on.
Expect the unexpected nowadays when selling anything to the public.
