The Athletic reports the AAF was forced to look for fresh investment last week to avoid the prospect of missing payroll. Carolina Hurricanes majority owner Tom Dundon stepped in to provide a $250 million commitment. Dundon will now be named the league's new chairman.

Duh. It's garbage. Someone start another thread on how exciting it is though.

The AAF missed payroll in Week 1. They told agents that it was a glitch with switching to a new administrator. They told players would be paid by today the latest.
this is really bad.

The AAF is trying to be what the USFL should have been 30 years ago. They are trying to follow the same original plan Dave Dixon and co. drew up without making the same mistakes that eventually ended the league (greedy owners including, but not limited to Donald Trump, breaking away from the original plan in pursuit of their own self interests)
In essence, the AAF is trying to be football socialism. All eight teams are owned by the league and the players are all paid roughly the same. Unfortunately, just like with socialism, you can only have so much of someone else's money before they start demanding to be a decision maker motivated by their own self interest...just like this guy now being named the league Chairman in exchange for his $250 mill. If the league doesn't generate enough revenue on its own it will need to bring in more investors...who will in turn want something for their investment.
Eventually, the better players are going to separate themselves and want to earn more than the other players
And they are trying this at a time where there are so many media/entertainment options available that they average person could just gloss over the games and never know this league existed. That's a far different media landscape from when the USFL began. Then, there were limited channels and just getting on TV meant you were going to get several million viewers
The USFL was able to gain some traction once they deviated from the original plan and started to hit the NFL at its weak spots. Namely, allowing college underclassmen to leave school early and enter the USFL (which was prohibited by the NFL) and by allowing rookies to be paid huge contracts the NFL wouldn't pay. That led to Herschel Walker, Steve Young, Reggie White and others joining the league. Capitalism then took over and the idealistic vision of everyone operating within a predetermined set of values and financial parameters went out the window.
In the end, self interest ALWAYS wins.

I feel like I subconsciously cooled some on the AAF after the first weekend.

I think if I were a Carolina Hurricanes season ticket holder, I’d be pissed. They could miss the playoffs by a spot, but the owner had an extra 250M laying around? WTF!

I always try to invest a ton of money in something that went broke its first week in business.

At least Vince McMahon has already set aside what? $150 million in cash to fund the first season.
How do you miss payroll on week 1?! That’s pathetic planning.

One thing alot of people don't grasp is that all the major pro sports leagues of today started out incredibly small and dumpy for many years, and slowly over time built up into what they are.
These new leagues seem to always try to jump in whole hog and be fully established, fully functional legit leagues from the get go. But there's no organic base to support it.

There is one way to save the AAF (if it truly is at a life and death crossroads), and no one will like it:
It gets purchased by the National Football League and is converted into the official minor league of the NFL.
