I can't think of one more obvious solution to help small market teams compete than the ability to be able to get rid of dead weight.

You can make an argument that guaranteed contracts play into larger TV markets hands who can eat the tax for long periods of time due to television contracts, etc.

Why isn't this discussed more?

Because the NBAPA would never agree to it. Ever.

It would never pass in a new CBA. They would have to give up too much to the players for them to even consider it.

What other basketball association these guys can go play for?

Doing that would solve a few issues immediately.

They can choose to not play at all, which is what would happen most likely

It’d be nice if I can get a guarantee contract at work.

What other players can the owners use and still print the kind of money they are.

You don't think the 85% of NBA players not making MAX or near MAX contracts would tow that line for an extended period of time?

Care to make a wager? lol

If I’m a billionaire owner I’d take that gamble. Bet the players tune would start changing when the child support and hush money starts calling.

You’re acting like it didn’t happen 8 years ago over like 2% of revenue

John Wall about to make 40million plus for sitting an NBA season and doing treatment.

Name another place on the planet you can do this?

I'll wait

Owners caved imo and now you have this glorified coastal league.

Because the players are getting like 50% of revenue instead of 48?

This wouldn’t solve the problem you want it to.

This also would never happen, NBAPA wouldn’t go for it and the owners don’t have the will to lose probably 1+ seasons trying to break the player’s will. Nevermind that this isn’t football or baseball, low and mid level players would just go make 7 figures in Europe and China if it drug on long enough.

Major League Baseball is basically the same if you adjust for roster size

Less guaranteed money would lead to players wanting to play for big markets even MORE so they could have a larger stream of off the court income from marketing themselves

It’s called the CBA with the NBPA.

They have a lot of power.
