you can buy a "nice car" for half the price of that Mercedes - that's what I'm saying.

No one's saying mom doesn't deserve a nice car. It's just that White could've bought a loaded Toyota (which is actually a higher quality car than MB) for half the price.

Now this purchase, by itself, isn't an issue. I'm just hoping White doesn't fall into the trap of over-the-top spending. He seems very grounded and humble so I'm bet he'll be fine, but there's nothing wrong with raising this issue, because it happens far too often with NFL players.

I guess people have different reactions.
Devin has lived his entire life with very little and when he was in a position to buy his first luxury item, he bought it for his mother, who likely has had little by way of luxuries in her life.
I thought it was a selfless gesture that merited our admiration, not criticism.

you're completely missing my point. I agree with most of your post - I merely said they White could've accomplished his goal with a better-quality vehicle at half the price. That's all I'm saying.

Mercedes gonna stop selling vehicles after the draft? Mama needs a luxury vehicle before the first check hits the bank? Eh.

Nah. I have a paid off 2009 VW Jetta for my everyday beater and a Audi S5 convertible for fun driving. I also don't live paycheck to paycheck. I just understand that a $70k car is a drop in the bucket in comparison to his expected contract. When he starts passing them around the neighborhood to acquaintances and making shady "investments" in friends' business ventures, then you can make your point.

So there is a video of Devin White buying his mom a new Mercedes. I'm guessing that his Agent gave him an advance on his projected rookie contract? How exactly does this work?
Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?

Sponsors. They can give him an advance.

ok, change that to Kia, Hyundai, or any of the 13 car brands that rank ahead of Mercedes on the JD Power 2018 Initial Quality ranking.
LINK

If you think Mercedes are the best cars, you're living a quarter century in the past. They may be among the most expensive, but they're not nearly the best.

Why because he rode up on a horse to campus one day?

1) Pumping up JD Power rankings is about as useless as it gets.

2) Everyone knows when you become a multi-millionaire you buy a Kia or a Hyundai.

It's like some of you people live in an alternate universe.

I just want to reiterate what atltiger6487 is suggesting:

He's saying that upon getting endorsement money and being fronted by his agent before the $20+ million he's about to have in 2 months, he should've run straight to the nearest Kia or Hyundai dealership to hook his mom up.

not even close.

What I was saying is Mercedes Benz's are overpriced, by about double.

You can get a higher quality car (not as prestigous, of course) for half the money. Really very simple to understand.

ETA: not to quibble, but last year, the no. 10 pick in the draft got an $11m signing bonus (total contract value is $17.8m). Taxes will take almost half, and his agent will get a cut, so let's assume White nets half of that.

$5.5m is life-changing, but it ain't $20m, as you suggested. Now yes, the GROSS amount over the span of his rookie deal would approach that number, but he doesn't net that amount in a few months.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you! Lol. It is usually a point or 2 above prime for mid to long term loans. If very short-term, it may be interst free.

Right. I know that's what you said. Go sit in a Kia/Hyundai and then go drive that Mercede's SUV and come back and report to the class. My suspicion is you've never set foot inside of a luxury car in your life though.
