Would you consider 7.1:1 a high enough gear ratio?
That'll work

Also, for the drag on the reel, so you just lock it down? Pretty much allow no give I’m guessing?
Bingo.
I use a Duckett Micro Magic 7'6" heavy with a Lew's Super Duty in 7.5:1. I lock the drag down. It has served me well. I concerned about the braid cutting into the guides, but the Micro Magic supposedly has some "braid proof" inserts. So far so good. Been using it for a couple of years now with no issues. I use 65# Power Pro.

IDK what your price range is for the rod, but I would not recommend taking the cheap route. Last thing you want to do is try to learn this technique with a heavy, unbalanced rod. Get you a good lightweight, 7'6" Heavy action rod with a little play in the tip (fast tip). I prefer a full cork handle for punching because it counters the heavy weight better than a split grip handle.
My last bit of advice, always try to punch with the lightest weight possible. 90% of the time I punch with a 1/2 ounce weight. I feel, I get more bites and my hook up ratio is higher with a lighter, smaller weight.
Fitzgerald makes some good line and I would recommend sticking to the 65#-70# line range.
I have two set ups I use to punch that way I can have big weight on (1oz-1 1/2oz) and a smaller weight (1/2-3/4 oz)
Rod: 7' 8" Heavy Gary Loomis Edge
Reel: 8.1:1 Shimano Metanium
Line: 80# Maxcuatro Powerpro (this line has the same diameter as regular 65# line
Hook: Owner 4/0 Jungle Flippin' Hook
Bait: Speedcraw if you looking for bites
Rod: G Loomis 7' 5" Heavy IMX Pro
Reel: 8.1:1 Abu Garcia ALX
Line: 70# Fitzgerald
Hook: Owner 5/0 Jungle flippin hook
Bait: Missile D-Bomb will produce a little better quality than speedcraw
Punching is by far my favorite way to fish no matter where I go or what time of the year it is.

That Dobyns Fury Rod is like $109 and could def get the job done.

Have never heard any complaints about ducketts next level rods when it comes to braid, issue seems to be exclusive to the “insert-free” stainless guides they used on the ghost. Stainless is a pretty soft material compared to prettymuch any ceramic, not sure why they thought that would fly when braid is so popular these days.

A lot of people bash Duckett, but I'm not sure why. I know braid cuts the guides on the Ghost series. As far as the micro-magic rods go, I've ever had any major issue. The only issue I've had was the insert in the tip coming out from using my rod to push a hung bait out. The tungsten weight seems to crack the ceramic insert just because of the density difference between both materials.

I know plenty of people who use micro magics and have no issues, and I have a triad that was my worm rod for a season until I upgraded to a GLX, but I still use it for other stuff and have no problems with it. They just left a bad impression with a lot of people with the ghost because that $99 price point is the sweet spot for tons of people on a rod, it sold like crazy because it’s light and feels good off the shelf, but it falls apart pretty quick with heavy use. I personally have had the guide wraps fail on one and the guides get cut on another as mentioned, and know of several people who have snapped them on routine hooksets.

Good advice on here. Wish I had come here before trying it, once. I went cheap and used my redfish rod with 20lb mono. That rod and line loaded up like a cannon trying to pull 1 1/4 oz of tungsten out of the grass. It came flying back like a rocket and I didn't have time to dunk. Hit me in the head. I'm sticking to redfish.

Tim Horton's fishing show last night was entirely on punching.
I use 50 pound super slick and never had a problem.
Hook: Strike King Hack Attack heavy cover flipping hooks, or Mustad Grip-Pin Punch Hook
Weight: at least 1oz. Don't remember the brand but find one with a hole with smoothed edges to save your line from getting frayed over time. Put one or two bobber stoppers.
Bait: pick one. I use either a Z craw or a large brush hog.
Fun way to fish but hard on the hands.

Thanks just placed an order. I’ll be good for flipping weights now.

I use a Abu Garcia Villain 8' flipping stick, with a 7:1 curado, 65lb braid.
It's one of my favorite setups, but will wear you out fishing it all day until you get used to the extra weight. The rod is the most important thing IMO for punching, you need something that has a lot of backbone.
