Anyone ever use a Boykin Spaniel as a duck retriever?

My last was a lab but I’m having a hard time getting another one because I was so close to him.

My friend's boykin is the most worthless bird dog I've ever been around. Incredibly high energy dog with a great personality and disposition. Retrieving just hasn't worked out.

Yes. Not the best option, but an option.

Isn’t there a Boykin that’s missing somewhere in Louisiana and the owners have some delusional Facebook page about it?

My Boykin just turned 7. Great dog. Great on the ducks. I’ll never own a lab

Got a pup from choupiquesushi. Great dog. She picked up 20 ducks this year since that is all me and my son shot. She just made 1 in december. Did well despite me training her myself. Great for the hunting we do out of kayaks and a gheenoe.

My dog is 4.5 and has averaged 100+ ducks a season over the last 4 years. Most he’s gotten on a hunt is just over 30.

My 28lb Boykin, Bijou, is a retrieving machine. I've been a champion of the breed for over 7 years and still am. Polar Pop has seen my little brown dog in action. They're an awesome breed.

As with any retriever, theyll go as far as and be as good as you are consistent with training.

Will they retrieve? Yes. Will they make a good retriever? Yes. Can a Boykin make a
better retriever than a Lab? Absolutely. Can the best Boykin in the world compete with the best Labrador in the world on all things retrieving? frick no. They will get smoked. As a matter of fact the best Boykin would get smoked by a mere above average lab. They can’t swim as well, see as well, run as fast, hunt as hard and as long as a Lab. They are simply not equal.

But if you want a small little retriever that will hunt go get you one. Just know you’re not getting a Labrador Retriever. I’ve hunted with a lot of good Boykins and good Labs.

Would the OP be willing to consider a rescue?
