Need advice - trip to Italy and Greece

Want to go to Italy and Greece this summer with a small group (less than 6). Thinking of flying into Rome. Doing a day or two in Rome then going to Amalfi Coast for a couple days. Then going on a 7 day cruise to different Greek cities - Athens, santorina, etc. What are your thoughts on MSC cruises?
Another option is to find your sail boat and captain and do the Greek cities/islands that way. Anyone ever do this? It is comparable in price to a larger cruise when you split it per person. Just have to buy own food, drinks, etc.
We have never been and trying to figure out the best way to do this and see the most. Any thoughts or links to old threads would be great.

You can book through European destinations and they will handle all of that for you

The Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite vacations. We spent a week in Positano a couple of years ago and can't wait to go back. It is easy to get there from Rome by train - Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale then www.transferelax.com to your hotel.

Hiring your own sailboat and being able to do the Greek islands at your own pace would be ideal, imo. Everything is so relaxed there that you're not going to want to abide by some cruise ship schedule. Gives you the freedom to go where you want, when you want, and also probably see some ports that the cruise ships wouldn't be able to get to. Did a day sail from Naxos over the summer and it was the highlight of our time there. You might find it a little more complicated as far as logistics go, but the tradeoff would be more than worth it.

We opted to save Greece/Almafi Coast for its own future trip. If you really want to take Rome in, you need at least 3 nights. We hit Rome hard for 3 nights and still could’ve used another night or two. With two nights, you’re going to need to prioritize what you want to see because you won’t be able to do everything.

I rode a train from Rome to Naples and rented a car. Big mistake. Next time, I will take a direct train straight from Rome to Salerno, then ride a ferry (12 euro) to Positano. Positano and the entire Amalfi coast is one of the most picturesque place in the world. I'm planning a week vacation there.
Personally I'd spend more time on land than on a cruise ship to see Greece. Spent 4 nights in Santorini last year, overlooking the beautiful caldera. Next time it will be for a at least a week.
