Wanted to see if any of you have ever done a stag hunt in New Zealand. I’m working on planning a trip for ‘21 and looking for other’s who have done this for pointers, outfitter Recommendations etc. Been to NZ once before so I’m familiar with the islands etc. Went to the Houston Safari Club outdoor show yesterday and got pumped up.

Through my research so far I would opt for an Estate hunt. So looking for one with plenty of acreage and not one where we go out and shoot one in the backyard. I know those exist. We want the experience for sure, but there is too much money tied up in it to go and hunt public land. I’ve read they are plentiful on public land, but they just don’t have the size.

I've always wanted to do one of those until I looked at flights. Good luck.

Call Shane Quinn. Top notch guide service.

James Gray.
Put me on a silver medal stag. My son and I each killed trophy Tahr. I killed a nice chamois. And we had a great paradise duck hunt. Was there for over a month.
James doesn't have some fancy lodge for your family to hang out in. But he's one of the better guides I've hunted with (and I've hunted a lot) and he's very well connected with landowners around the country.

Name sounds familiar. I’ll look him up. Thanks

I’ll look him up. Thanks for the recommendation. Did have you on an Estate or public land?

Estate for stag. Shot a Silver Medal after passing on a Gold Medal. They were very close in size, but I just liked the look of the Silver Medal better.
It's been a few years since I was there, but the phone number I had for him is:

What’s the difference in the metals and what did you like better about the silver?

SCI Gold Medal starts at score of 361, I think.
Mine was just under that. Silver is like 290-360.
The one I took has a down-turned tine that I liked the looks of. Really hard to tell that he was any smaller. We stalked and glassed both of them and I went back to the Silver because to the one unusual tine.

Have never had much success posting pics to this site, but willing to try if you can tell me how without having to sign up for some hosting site.

You may want to look into Scotland as well. I talked to an outfitter there, the prices were much better.

I stag hunted Scotland last year. We didn’t spring for a guide, rather, went with some locals in their version of a hunting club who’d come to our farm to hunt in the past. While I have no regrets about the trip, if your intent is to kill trophy animals, I would stick with NZ. Scotlands wild herds didn’t appear to be managed like our deer or elk are.

argentina can be much more reasonable

To me, it's the most beautiful animal of the deer species.
I mean, just look at it.
