Want to catch crawfish.

So I'm a Yankee that has been living here for a good while now and I have a 5 year old. I've come to the conclusion that I need to get him doing outdoor stuff. I've been lurking here for a while now and I've come to the conclusion that I need a crash course in hunting, fishing, and just about everything yall do.
Last year I was given some "set nets"? to catch crawfish by an old timer at my church. I have no idea what the hell I'm doing, and they are kind of annoying to deal with. Been looking at crawfish traps at Bass Pro and Cabelas, and someone told my that I could go to Sherburne WMA to catch them.
But what kind of meat do should I put in the traps? How long to I leave them in the water? Anywhere else to catch mudbugs in Ascension?

Beef melt for bait. How many nets do you have? A couple dozen should be enough work for you. Once you get them all set, it's probably about time to start picking them up again. You'll need a long pole of some sort to set them and then pick them back up.

An atv is almost a must at Sherburne South Farm.
I recommend taking the saw blade off a telescoping pole saw and using that to pick up nets.

A vehicle isn’t allowed in the south farm.
A lot of people go on foot and pull a wagon or something similar.
Search online for south farm or crawfishing on tigerdroppings - they have some good past threads.

I'm just curious...why would you choose crawfishing as the first outdoor activity you do with a five year old. I mean crawfishing can be fun, but it can also be a whole lot of work, travel, money, and generally a pain in the arse. What are you going to do if you happen to catch a mess of crawfish? You gonna clean them? Call a bunch of friends for a crawfish boil, spur of the moment type thing.
Get yourself a .22 and take the kid plinking or bank fishing somewhere or wandering around a wma.
If you have a boat, throw some jug lines out. There are numerous other outdoor activities that are much easier with a 5 yr old than crawfishing. But hey, if you are committed to going crawfishing, i say go for it. As long as you and your kid are enjoying the outdoors, that's all that counts.

Anybody have tips on BC spillway? I hear it’s pretty good at times, we go ride out there and I train the dog in the back I but haven’t ever crawfished it.

It has been years, but I have been south of Ramah along the levee and put out set nets and caught plenty of small crawfish in 2 hours. The water is high now, but needs to warm up some. South Farm doesnt open for crawfish till mid march, I think.

some of the best/cheapest fun thing to do for a kid is to give them a dipnet and let them drag it through a wet ditch or creek
used to do that with my son and the neighborhood kids in the ditches behind the houses they would catch crawfish and fish and dragonfly nymphs and grass shrimp and tadpoles and carry them around in a bucket to show them off

Kept mine bust with a willow branch, piece of string and a hot dog for bait in ditches around the house. They'd catch crawfish, eels, small alligators...they had a ball.

Only because I already have some nets, pot and burner; and honestly it's something that I've always wanted to do. Friends of mine have already taught me how to clean and boil them, I just want to try and catch a sack on my own.
Where we live a bayou runs through our neighborhood and we have banked fished, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. (I grew up in Philly).
What's plinking? I wouldn't mind wandering a WMA. I don't own a gun and haven't shot one since I got out the Army. I'm not a liberal or anything, or against guns I just never got around to buying one.

Awesome. Well you've come to the right place for advice.
Plinking is just shooting. I only bring that up because my 10 yo son still really enjoys shooting the steel targets with his cricket that he has pretty much outgrown.

Crawfishing is indeed a lot of work, but can be very rewarding. When you bring your little one make sure you both are weary of snakes! Moccasins, copperheads, rattlesnakes etc. You might want to get a .22 or 410 before you go. Welcome to Louisiana!

Where in LA do you live? In the spring (March -April) you will see trucks pulled off the side of highways by swamp areas. When you 3 or more in the same area that means they are probably crawfishing. I would pull a decent distance past those trucks and put your nets in the water in a line 10 yrds apart with some beef melt, or fish heads. Try it out a couple afternoons and see what happens. give the youngster a stick or something to do while you are continually checking traps. Most likely a trial and error process.

Well, you could always just go to a sporting goods store and buy a Benjamin Pump Pellet Gun and several containers of pellets for it. A .177 is a fun little gun for a kid to start out with. Just set up a target about 20 ft. or so away and let him go at it. If you don't want a pump type, you can get the ones that use CO2 cartridges instead of pumping for air pressure.

I'll second this. Not many times I went crawfishing and didn't run into some type poisonous snake, mostly moccasins. Once I even caught a 6 ft. gator off of old Hwy. 51 near the Manchac area.
