Looks like it was made in the 60s. Gas is still connected to it but I’ve never lit it. Looks in decent shape. Would be nice to warm up the bathroom in the AM before my shower. Are these still typically safe or will I burn my house down?

Looks like this

Hell yeah. My parents’ house has those. They are amazing. Bathroom heats up quick AF.

Wish you could still get them installed.

likely it was put in before the 60's. I grew up with one just like that in the bathroom. turn on the gas low, and put a match to it. it should work, no reason to think it wouldn't.

Seems like the home inspector should've covered this. If you rent, just go for it.

Depends on what you ate the night before

Looks like the previous owner toasted some frozen waffles in there. Are you sure that it's not a toaster of some kind?

Really no worse than having other gas appliances. If you have a gas hotwater heater in your attic there is a lit flame up there 24/7. Or gas pilots on a stove. If you’re that worried, get a plumber to come inspect it.

It was nice knowing you.

Well, not exactly “nice” but it was something knowing you.

OK, you’ve been a pain in our collective asses here but if you get burnt up, well... it’s probably Karma at work.

tl/dr: Light it. Meh, what could go wrong?

Those heaters are the shite. I used to live in a house that had a bathroom heater and tile exactly like that but all pink

Those things are relaxing. I'm envious of the great shits you will take with that heater.

Those old tiled bathrooms with the gas heaters remind me of a couple of rent houses I lived in. Cold AF!

They are illegal, but do a great job. Keep in mind they eat up the oxygen
and therefore are frowned upon, not to mention the fire hazard.
