OT PSA on Extended Auto Warranties

Im in the auto transmission repair business and in my experience, extended warranties are in the least a waste of money and at worst an outright scam.
The current extended warranty company Im dealing with, American Auto Shield looks to be a scam. Since day 1 this car arrived AAS has tried everything to deny, delay or obstruct the repairs to their customers car. The point I am at in this repair normally takes 1 day but due to AAS it has taken a week to reach this point. I am now trying to contact AAS with an estimate but their phones are down. Every time Ive called it has taken on average 1 hour to get through. This is evermore frustrating because 90% of the time the estimate I write is in vain since most extended warranty companies end up replace the part with a junkyard part of their choosing and not getting the repairs.
So good people of the OT DO NOT BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY while your in the back room with the finance manager. If you are looking to get fricked buying an Airline Dr hooker would be cheaper. Hope this helps.

but if they hire a lawyer to fight the insurance company then they're the reason our rates go up!

Wait I've had two of them (100k mile) warranties replace transmissions for me in my day.
But they were sold to me by reputable large dealerships. Are dealer-backed extended warranties a scam too?

All extended warranties are 3rd party and not dealer warranties

I think it largely depends on the company offering the warranty.

last week i was in a deluge of calls from some company trying to scam. i finally got to the "finance manager" to find out how much they were. it was like $131/month for 36 months. like 5 grand, for a 3-year old car
when i told the lady i wasn't interested after i heard the price she legitimately went off on me

I know newer cars are more expensive for transmissions but I cant think of one that is 5 grand.

well yes extended warranties are always a rip off, but if your car has a CVT tranny what choice do you really have?
they grenade every 75k miles and you need to rebuild or replace them
speaking of which, since you are in the business, what year cars have those trannys so we can all avoid buying them?

I get it and never bought an extended warranty until I bought my current F250 Powerstroke. Was concerned about the fuel injectors and the cost of replacing them since it was my first Ford diesel and it was my understanding that the cab had to come off to get to the rear injectors.
I spent $1650 on an extended warranty that covered me to 100,000 miles after the factory warranty. These are the items that were covered by my extended warranty.
EGR sensors... all 4 of them twice (3 trips)
Fuel Pump
Radiator due to a crack/leak
Transmission line due to rubbing a hole in it from a previous Ford warranty repair of an EGR. They broke the clip that held the cooling line and it rubbed a hole in it. Thanks Ford.
Under the extended warranty it was $100 each time the truck went in... regardless of the repair. EGRs were changed out in pairs on 2 trips. Then right before my extended warranty engine light on once again due to 1 of them. Dealer changed all 4 at one time under my extended warranty. So 3 visits x $100
Of course Fuel Pump, Radiator, and Transmission line were each $100 so $300 total for these.
So, my extended warranty cost me $1650 + 6 x $100 so $2250. Was it worth it? Not really but I did use it.

too many to list. Nissan loves CVT. Honda has CVTs even Toyota which has hands down the best tyrannies on the road has gone CVT on their smaller cars.

My extended warranty didn’t cost me extra money 
Dealership offered me a much lower interest rate if I got a Mopar extended warranty. The interest rate was way lower than any other bank I was looking to finance with.
Made my monthly payments actually lower than if I didn’t get the extended warranty and had the higher interest rate.

Well this isn't true. You can get factory extended warranty that extend your 3/36k limited warranty. They are more expensive than the 3rd party ones, but they usually actually cover things.

That's a good question. If I had gone to Ford for non-warranty repairs then no. Had I gone to a good repair shop... probably about even is my guess.
Truth is the EGRs and the radiator I could have done myself for cheaper and in less time. The thing about the Ford dealer in my area is that when the engine light comes on... I have to plan on dropping the damn truck off all day at a minimum and probably overnight. This is a major pain in the arse for me and of course for my wife. She wants me to go back to a GMC because the service was so much better.
Would I recommend an extended warranty? No I agree with the OP.

well mainly i was hoping to hear the model years to avoid
i think toyota started with the cvt in 2011 and "i think" stopped using them in 2016 but not sure about that
i just almost bought a very clean 2011 camry $2k under book value with only 62k miles but then i saw it had the cvt so i walked away from it. i was ready to buy and only at the last second learned about the cvt nightmares
