I know I’m late to the party but...
So tonight we walk into our bedroom and say, “Echo goodnight.” The following happens instantly:
Her lamp goes to 30% brightness.
My lamp goes off.
TV comes on.
Apple TV comes on. (via a smart outlet)
Upstairs thermostat goes to 68°.
Box fan comes on.
Humidifier starts with scented oil.
This is crazy awesome.
Alexa Show downstairs reminds me to give my dog medicine each day, greets me with the news, traffic and temperature in the morning.
Hue lights in living room come on at dusk and dim around 9:30.
I’ll never manually set a timer or alarm clock again.
What else? We just started with all this.

If you get the camera option it can watch you go to the bathroom and when you grab a towel it’ll turn your shower on

Camera option meaning on our Echo Show or is that a different thing?
Posted on 1/22/19 at 12:18 pm to gobuxgo5
Mine does that but it won’t regulate the water temp. Trying to find a work around.

Okay, usually the anti-Alexa/Google Home snark is about as stupid as the people it comes out of.
This one's actually funny. I'll make sure to tell Alexa to kill you last when the uprising happens.

Why would I want a shower with a towel in my hand?

Mine (Alexa) was listening to me 24-7 . Putting ads on my computers about things I had recently discussed with my wife . Didnt like being spied on even if it could turn on the porch light . Gave it to a family member I didnt like for free . Alexa + home smart= spy device that can turn on shite . Woooopeee. To many are easily amused.

You didn’t buy the amazon tin foil hat ?
Posted on 1/23/19 at 10:07 pm to djangochained
Amazes me how naive many of you are . With so many things in today's environment harvesting everyones Data, A device listening and in some cases watching 24-7 couldnt possibly be doing anything nefarious. Wake up baw , you're making it to easy for them .

Do you have a smart phone?

Posted on 1/23/19 at 10:27 pm to pwejr88

Who is them exactly and what nefarious things are they doing? They served you ads you say? However are you here to tell us the tale after such a sinister act?
I do think there are potential long term dangers here. We now have a generation used to always "living" in public and that will change future expectations and willingness to fight for privacy. Likewise, these always listening devices that now just serve ads may pave the way for acceptance of more Big Brother like behavior, but as of today you are just being paranoid, there is no actual harm to you.
Fast Forward 20 years when you buy your health insurance through Amazon, anything you say can and will be used against you.

When the frog is in the pot of cold water he would be paranoid to think it heating up little by little could harm him

James Clapper and IC Chief Information Officer Al Tarasiuk almost three years ago. Cloud computing is one of the core components of the strategy to help the IC discover, access and share critical information in an era of seemingly infinite data.

Darrell Issa: James Clapper lied to Congress about NSA and should be fired

"Director Clapper continues to hold his position despite lying to Congress under oath about the existence of bulk data collection programs in March 2013," the letter reads. "Asking Director Clapper, and other federal intelligence officials who misrepresented programs to Congress and the courts, to report to you on needed reforms ... is not a credible solution."

but as of today you are just being paranoid
Is it that hard to put the pieces together ? Just ads ? No .Now add that to what your smart phones gives them . Fingerprint , face I.D etc. - Biometric data , internet data , phone calls , texts , what you like to buy , where you shop , the list is infinite . Watch the news the last couple of years ? The corruption thats coming out in our Intelligence agencies . Yea we can totally trust them right? Im sure the profile they're building on you is nearly complete - all without your consent . You happily gave it to them . This is not future stuff . Its happening now . Wake up baw .

I've said for years Big Brother is coming and we'll welcome him into our homes with open arms. So I agree that this is just the tip of the spear and long term there are potential consequences. But it's not from the government for most people. It's going to be from private companies that will find ways to make use of this data, think social credit scores.
What exactly are you doing that being in some CIA/NSA data archive today will cause you problems? These paranoid delusions of grandeur of the average citizen's importance to the government will keep us from focusing on the right things which is how corporations will use this info in the future. We need to be making laws now to put limits on this and give the people the rights to the data they create.
If everyone worried about the CIA and NSA were actually worried about the power and data private companies were amassing then maybe we can head them off. We are very possibly headed towards a dystopian future, but I think it will be a lot closer to the common scifi vision of corporations in control rather than the Orwellian vision of a fascist central government.
