Basketball memories

It's been lots of fun to see all the excitement about LSU basketball again. I haven't seen it like this since the days of Daddy Dale Brown. I remember watching Howard Carter, DeWayne Scales, Rudy Macklin, Greg Cook, Ethan Martin, Willy Sims, Leonard Mitchell, Jordy Hultberg, John Tudor, Johnny Jones. . . All these guys when I was in junior high and high school. A few years later I was able to leave the state of Kentucky and attend that beautiful university in Baton Rouge. Got to see Nikita Wilson, Derrick Taylor, Nikita Wilson, Ricky Blanton, Jose Vargas, Geert Hammink, Lyle Mouton, Neboisha Bukumiravich, Zoran Jovanavich, Russell Grant, Darryl Joe, Vernel Singleton, Chris Jackson, Shaq'. . . So many great players and so many great games.
I think my favorite was the Loyola Marymount game in 1990. The score was in the 70s at half-time and at the end Loyola Marymount had scored 141 points against the Tigers, but they still lost by seven. LSU 148 - Loyola Marymount 141.
We played on Super Bowl Sunday that year against UNLV and whpped them pretty solidly as well. Dick Vital called the game and kept saying, "Bite the towel, Jerry! Bite the towel!" as Jerry Tarkanian chewed on a towel in frustration while LSU buried his team.
And then there were all those wonderful break away plays when we'd all stand up as we watched Jose Vargas head toward the goal with no one anywhere near him, then when he'd go up to jam it, the ball would hit the back of the rim and bounce out all the way back to half court. (I recall this happening twice - once each in different seasons.) Just that collective "Awwww. . . " coming out of the student section. Man, Vargas' hands were huge!
I wish I had been there for the February 82 game against Kentucky when Mike rappelled from the rafters before the game. Final score was 94-78. I was in junior high living in Kentucky at the time and fully enjoyed seeing the disappointment on all my friends' and neighbors' faces while I proudly wore my purple and gold shirts every day at school for the next week. My English teacher threatened me with detention for being so "uppity" about the Tigers destroying Kentucky like that.
And how can anyone ever forget the 35-point scar LSU left across the face of Rupp Arena in January 1987 when Dale Brown's Tigers beat Kentucky 76-41. (Wow! That game was played 32 years ago yesterday! shite. I'm old!)
Enough of my reminiscing. I'm just glad to see LSU getting back into relevance on the hard wood. It'll be fun to be able to compete with the likes of Kentucky, Georgetown, Duke, and other perpetually great teams.

It will ALWAYS and FOREVER be the Smith/Swift fake pass and throw down as the first half expired against #5 Arizona in 2000. We went on to win by 26. That place was rockin'.

We need enough noise in the PMAC to warrant another Deaf Dome meter. As a kid that was my favorite non-basketball part of the experience.

I was a student in 1981 for Dale's first Final Four team and went to Philly for the game. At that time the Assembly Center crowd was second to none. The place was packed and rocking every night. I often state on this board that there is no reason it can't be like that again. I am usually told that those days are over. I don't accept that.

It will just take time. If we keep winning, they will come.

Mine was Dales last game against Arkansas only because my friend and I snuck down to right behind the ark bench. Nolan scared the crap out of us as we yelled during their timeouts . He was a legend.

Okay. I'll admit it was a rather shallow grave.
It was still a helluva a great game though. Vital kept on saying how it was the best game going on in Louisiana that day, even with the Super Bowl in New Orleans. (I believe I'm remembering that correctly, but then again I'm getting old and some of these game memories are prone to be a tad bit off.

When LSU is winning, the hoops atmosphere is great. Besides great years under Dale, it was awesome during the stromile/Jabari era, the final four run under Brady, and the SEC championship run under Trent.

That 2000 sweet sixteen run was special but 2006 was just such a great ride.

Haven't seen this mentioned
LSU defeats Kentucky, 95-94, Feb. 11, 1978.
Perhaps the most important regular-season game win of the Dale Brown Era. This victory signified LSU had arrived on the basketball scene.
Kentucky came into the game ranked No. 1 in the country and would later go on to win the national championship.
But on this night at the Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, the Tigers would be victorious. All five of LSU's starters fouled out of the game. The contest went into overtime. Yet, LSU prevailed at the end.

When we won the game in the Superdome to advance to Philly in the final four, Dale Brown was literally *leaping* in the air as he left the court. I, too, made the trip to Philly. It was a wonderful atmosphere despite the loss.
But my favorite memories are of Pete's freshman year in the cow palace. Those were magical times. I was a freshman when Pete was a freshman so I got to enjoy his career first hand. A lot of the team was from Aliquippa, PA near where my family was from so I felt a special bond with them. Sweet times for sure. Anyone remember little Rich Lupcho? He was a fan favorite because he was so small.

I was kind of young for the Rudy Mackin team but I Remember the mid 80's teams with Derrick Taylor, Don Redden (RIP). The team with Anthony wilson, Nikita wilson, Oliver Brown was probably my favorite final four team. Shaq teams were great too watch also. It is really nice getting excited about basketball again.
