The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Thursday voted just before midnight Thursday to reject two controversial requests for industrial tax breaks from the biggest taxpayer in the parish.

quote:

The 5-4 vote marked a rare defeat for ExxonMobil, which has received hundreds of such tax exemptions via the decades-old Industrial Tax Exemption Program, or ITEP, and a big victory for critics of the program, including the faith-based group Together Baton Rouge

quote:

“This is a new day for a new type of economic development in Louisiana,” an excited Dianne Hanley, a leader of Together Baton Rouge, said afterward.

Oh Dianne... you are definitely correct about one thing...

quote:

After the vote, ExxonMobil representatives sound a more cautious note. Stephanie Cargile, a spokeswoman for the company, said the company tried hard to follow the shifting rules for ITEP over the past two years, and spoke at length with local officials about their plans. While the company is in a growth mode in Baton Rouge, with plans to add hundreds of jobs at its refinery this year, such growth can’t be taken for granted and future projects could go to Texas and to other company operations,

quote:

“In order to compete, one of the many things that we do look at is cost,”

Then there is this gem from this teacher... I wonder how excited you will be when exxon closes in 10 years...

quote:

“I am so happy. I hope this is the beginning of a new era of public funding and investing in my students,” said Mary Trigg, an art teacher at Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School. “I’m excited that they will begin to have the resources they need for success. Yeah, democracy!”

Exxon should discontinue all volunteer efforts and any corporate sponsorship with EBR schools.

Liberals live in this ideal world where they can have their cake and eat it too. It’s absurd to think their will be no consequences to making a business pay more taxes. They don’t need BR, BR needs them

The saddest part about this, besides her being that stupid, is she’s teaching kids the same shite. Looks like it’s a good time to be moving out of EBR.

Don't worry, West Baton Rouge Parish voted to give the ITEP to Exxon. They said the economic illiteracy ends at the Mississippi River.

Although I don't think Exxon should have gotten the ITEP for a project already complete, the School Board is very shortsighted knowing Exxon is debating spending a Billion dollars on an expansion in the near future. This particular ITEP was for $2.5M over a 10 year period. Pennies on the dollar compared to a $1B project with 1500 workers all living and working in BR.

Oh, and frick Together Baton Rouge

You BR mfers better not talk shite about the LP anymore. Bunch of goddamn retards in EBRP. ExxonMobil supports tons of jobs and puts millions of dollars back into the community. But yeah... give them a reason to go somewhere else, idiots.

If the folks at ITEP doesn't want the Exxon expansion, TX will gladly take it.

Because of this, I can almost guarantee this project won't happen in BR... they basically said it in the news release, stating they have tried to follow ITEP with no avail...

Although it would be bad for me personally (although I hope to go overseas for my next project) if it went elsewhere, I kind of hope it does just to give the proverbial "frick you" to Together Baton Rouge.

You have no idea how correct you are. My two sons that are chemical engineers are destined to continue their careers in Texas. The hired TBR terrorists win, the community loses. And the Mayor expects Exxon to hire the displaced workers from GP. Not sure who are the dimmest bulbs, the politicians, the school board or these idiot teachers cutting off their nose to spite their face. They really don’t get it.

You can either voluntarily not collect these taxes and get the jobs that go with these investments.

Or you can not collect these taxes and not have the jobs that go with these investments since they all went to Texas.

Either way, you aren't getting the tax revenue.

Fighting industrial expansion isn't going to help.

Perhaps fixing your fricking schools will.
