District Court Fines Austin, TX, $9M for Refusing Carry of Handguns at City Hall
quote:
In the January 17, 2019, ruling, Judge Lora J. Livingston explained that the Plaintiff was able to show that open carry was refused on April 4, 2016, April 6, 2016, April 12, 2016, July 1, 2016, July 29, 2016, and September 7, 2016. Judge Livingston ruled that the Defendants did not prove why City Hall should be treated differently among other public areas in Texas, writing, “Defendants did not meet their burden to establish an exception to Section 411.209(a) on any of the dates” that open carry was refused.
quote:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) sent Breitbart News a press release in support of the decision. Paxton said:
The district court’s ruling preserves and protects the Second Amendment rights of Texans and sends a strong message to the city of Austin that they are bound by the same laws as all other Texans. The city of Austin cannot violate the open carry law or any other law the Texas Legislature has enacted simply because they disagree with it. If the city of Austin appeals the district court’s decision, my office will continue to strongly defend the right of law-abiding Texans to keep and bear arms in accordance with our handgun laws.
It's a shame that people have to got through this for their rights under the law but props for the DC kicking them in the balls.

$9M = $9,000
$9MM = $9,000,000
$9MM = $9,000,000

I’ve never seen anyone write 9,000 as 9M outside Latin America.

I see it daily while working on commercial loans in the banking sector. It is a common error and can be avoided by using $9K as an alternative to $9M . . . But $9M should not be used for $9,000,000.

use "M" to refer to thousand and "MM" for million all the time. It is how barrels of oil are labeled.

I'm going to have to call Auntie Maxine and get her to change that

I can tell you that in financial sectors $9,000 is represented as either $9K or $9M while $9,000,000 is represented as $9MM.
I get the M and MM because of the Roman numeral aspect, and without context I could maybe see why he said 9000, but it specifically says in the article "nine million."
Which tells me he's foreign and/or works in the financial/oil industry based on the posts in here...and most importantly, he didn't read the article.

I have seen it used in the engineering field once or twice but that’s it. I don’t think it’s very common.

Calm down and read the whole thread. I did not point out the error, someone else did. When the discrepancy was questioned I offered a link to clarify the matter. If any part of my posts came off as bitching, then I apologize. My intent was only to clarify an earlier question about the abbreviation.

The headline said 9,000, but the article said 9 million. Because I like to be accurate, I actually clicked on the little hyperlink that said “ruling,” and what do ya know, it was actually the Judge’s ruling. It said 1,500 per violation for a total of 9,000.
Thanks for being an idiot.

I'll continue to use $9M to indicate $9000000.
