Google financial abbreviations. I can tell you that in financial sectors $9,000 is represented as either $9K or $9M while $9,000,000 is represented as $9MM.
While technically correct on the $9M vs. $9MM I can tell you I never, ever see the single M to indicate thousands. I am a licensed investment banker with several sell side deals and a couple IPOs on the table right now and I have never in 20 years of experience in the industry seen the single M used for thousands.
Most bankers use M and MM interchangeably, in fact if I were to use the single M for thousands it would create confusion and I would likely be told I was mis-representing the figures.
