Why do people think electric cars are somehow better for the environment?

Help me understand how electric cars are better than traditional internal combustion powered vehicles? Sure you don’t have emissions coming out of the tailpipe. But the electricity used to charge the battery has to come from somewhere, namely a power plant. And if everyone switched to these electric vehicles then we’re going to need a whole lot more power plants, far more tham wind or solar could support. But the worst thing to come from electric cars is the batteries. Do people not understand what goes into making batteries? What’s required? Now imagine how many of these batteries would be required to meet the transportation needs of the country. And then there is the issue of disposal/recycling of old batteries. The more I think about it, the more the notion of electric cars being “better” for the environment looks absurd.

The loony left argument will be that we should move to 100% renewable power plants (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.).

Because liberals are very superficial people who only care about appearances and nothing else. They're incapable of thinking three steps ahead.

I notice my OP is getting plenty of downvotes but no intelligent counterpoints. Wonder why that is?

It's easier and cleaner to make electricity than to refine petroleum

Scruffy doesn’t care one way or another.

He does like that his hybrid was getting 35 MPG for 13 years.

Saved lots of money.

New ones get above 50 MPG which is insane.

Can’t wait.

Unbiased Video on the Subject

This guy's youtube channel is very informative for a wide range of vehicle questions.

I hate how innovation someone doesn't understand is now being termed, "Looney left"

Gasoline production is a dirty affair just like battery production.

The reason I am pro-electric has nothing to do with the environment. It is simply cost. I can get 300 miles out of my electric vehcile at a cost of $1.75 whereas 300 miles on a camry would be $10.75 (roughly assuming 30 MPG and gas price of $1.75/gal). That cost of gasoline also goes up at a greater rate than electricity when the price of oil increases.

As for the environment question, can you show that the increase in electricity production required or the increase in battery creation would have a larger impact on the environment than the pumping, refining, and burning of petroleum?

I'm ignorant on electric vehicles. Do they still use motor oil?

Prove how it works.

Go breathe in gas fueled emissions through a hose pipe for a day.

Do the same for a electric car and report back.

We're waiting btw

I don't believe anyone has done a valid analysis on this subject. You may be right once all of the factors are considered. Certainly the benefits of electric vehicles aren't as great as some people think.

The killer for electric cars is their limited range, about 250 miles maximum, with 45 minute times for a full charge. This makes these vehicles useless for long trips and suitable for town cars only.
