quote:Why is that? Does it make any difference how long they are furloughed?
Those not working should not receive back pay.

What many are missing is the gov't kinda strings them along by suggesting the shutdown will end soon.
But the 380,000 can ride it out drawing unemployment....so if they are paid it should be minus their unemployment checks.
Who is getting royally fricked is essential personnel.
They are still required to work without pay....without unemployemnt benefits.....and because they are still working fulltime they don't have the time to find and work a temporary job.

When DOD civilians were sent home a few years ago on sequester, they got back pay despite not working.
And they should have.
These people have bills and jobs. They aren’t choosing not to work.

Because if they don’t and this goes for a while, good luck getting quality federal employees in the future. It’s hard enough to hire quality federal employees in technical fields as it is.

So your solution is to have them all get new jobs? If they do that, they aren’t coming back. Talk about breaking the system. That’s a nuclear option.

93,
We agree. It is never an easy scenario for those families. We also agree that it is because of the “cowards” in congress that this has reached the point where we find ourselves. Instead of balancing a budget, they continually pass continuing resolutions.

Cowboy, i have no doubt that this scenario is more involved than the average guy (me) is aware.

No, not at all. You know, you could just google this and find it all over the internet right now. They are furloughed, not laid off. Law clearly states that they are still employed by the federal government, so they must continue to abide by ethics laws regarding outside employment.

Stop trying to help them understand. People entrench their opinion and then refuse to understand if they are wrong.
The shutdown is more damaging than some will admit and if it continues will severely impact federal talent management at affected agencies and departments.

No, it does not. If they are sitting on their arse at home they should not be paid. Do you get paid for not working? They are eligible for unemployment as well...
Posted on 1/12/19 at 12:39 pm to The Maj
Why in the hell should a federal worker that could be making in excess of $100K have to take a huge pay cut (max unemployment weekly benefit in D.C. is $425) when they have a job and are willing to work? They weren’t fired...they are simply caught in a food fight.

This has NOTHING to do with an inability to balance the budget. This is about those that submitted an appropriations bill not incorporating a $5B insert for the wall. The CR was only to keep the government going while the veto threat due to an unfunded wall was being addressed.
Congress writes appropriations, but the President can veto it. No wall funding = veto.

I'm guessing there's more to this than backpay for workers.

It's doing what he has to do for a common sense security and economic solution.
The Dems aren't just going to give in willingly.

The wall is a political rhetoric that doesn't solve the real problem. Yes it will help but most know it is easier to drive or fly through our ports of entry than try to cross illegally. The only reason to cross illegally or not enter through a port if you were previously deported or lack a passport
We need laws not walls. Congress needs to pass a bill that prohibits citizenship and/or asylum to those who cross the border illegally and/or overstay. Then we should enforce our immigration laws.

This is how I see it. If you take a job with the federal government and you know, as all adults do, that we have federal government shutdowns. Those people that work for the feds know it could happen and should save for when it happens.
