7 Republicans who voted against back pay for furloughed workers

It’s probably terrible politics but once you hear the logic behind the “No” vote you understand it’s based on principle. My only problem is that the politicians are the ones that caused the shutdown.

The House and Senate this week voted overwhelmingly to provide back pay to about 800,000 federal workers who are going without paychecks because of the partial government shutdown.
But seven lawmakers - all House Republicans - opposed the measure. Those "no" votes came from Reps. Justin Amash (Mich.), Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Glen Grothman (Wis.), Thomas Massie (Ky.), Chip Roy (Texas) and Ted Yoho (Fla.).

Roy issued a statement on Friday explaining his vote.
"There is zero question that we should pay federal workers. I do not, however, support putting federal spending on autopilot indefinitely or authorizing future pay irrespective of the circumstances," he said. "I would gladly have voted to pay federal employees at the end of the current lapse, but we should do so methodically and always ensure we are managing the budget wisely."

Let's say this thing went on for another three, four, five, six months. You would have people that didn't work at all being paid money from the federal government," he said.
About 420,000 federal employees deemed "essential" are working without pay during the shutdown, while about 380,000 have been furloughed.
Gosar issued a statement after the vote saying the bill removes an incentive to resolve the shutdown swiftly.
"This ill-conceived legislation takes away a useful tool in holding government accountable," he said. "Shutdowns have historically served to push both parties to compromise and resolution. This bill eliminates the impact and urgency a shutdown creates and rewards bureaucrats and swamp dwellers."

Those not working should not receive back pay.

I say pay them all, less 5%. All workers, all contractors, all contracts, all budgets... knock everything by 5%. If congress can’t get it together in six months, then cut everything another 5%. Keep it going. Let’s see who gets re-elected.

People who do not work should not get paid.
Like in the private sector.
G employees knew the fricking risks or should have known.
Zero sympathy. Live by The Swamp....starve by your fricking Swamp.

What do they think happens in the private sector? Layoffs suck. You go and find work.
No one is gonna take care of you but you

Damn right.
Does anyone in government shed a tear anytime a private sector business goes under and otherwise hard working people (much moreso than G employees) lose their paychecks?
No fricking way.

Happens all the time anyway

We have way too many government employees that needs to be cut drastically. But to just suddenly take all their pay away is pretty messed up

frick em. All federal employees will be more than taken care of eventually. Unlike me.

Were they being accurate, fair and reasonable, they would legislate that no Congressman or Senator is paid during a shutdown. No time accrued toward retirement. No benefits. Nothing.
Unlike the furloughed workers, politicians are in this spot of their own doing. We are here because they didn't do their damned jobs in the first place. So they should get no pay, and no back pay either. Not 1¢.
Were these nitwits to make that proposal, I'd say it was principled.
As is?
Nope.
Not principled, and poor politics.

It takes most federal agencies six months to a year to complete the hiring process. If employees quit en masse it would be felt for some time to come. I guess if you are a government is bad person thus works fit you. This is just a stunt... government still functions. If they stopped paying military personnel the pressure to end this would be intense.

How about loss of pay for the politicians so they got some skin in the game?

I bet the contractors aren't getting back pay.

Makes sense, but since your dumbass counterparts can't do their job, you still think the people should suffer, Gosar?
I get what he's saying, but he's really going to deny pay for 4, 5 or 6 months because his idiot colleagues can't do their job, all while still getting paid?!

There's a difference, but you people in this poliboard slum don't seem to get it. If you're laid off, you have no job. If you go on strike, you chose to walk out on your job. If you are furloughed, you still have a job, but you are being told not to come to work because politicians didn't do their job.
This is more like a Board of Directors fighting over how to run a company, and telling everyone to go home for a week or two until they can figure it out. A friend of mine works for a company that closed up for 2 weeks around Christmas. Told people not to come in, and made them take PTO. If you want to do it that way, fine, but people shouldn't be screwed out of pay because the "bosses" can't do their job.

I am seeing a lot of stories on the news about people not able to pay their bills, taking their car and selling it to Carmax, etc. I am not seeing any stories about people finding other jobs, or temporary work to pay their bills.
There is no shame in cutting grass, shoveling snow, or delivering pizza to make sure your kids are fed and have a place to call home.

Yep, I've been laid off due to corporate failure.
No one guaranteed my pay.
Welcome to the real world.
