Trump is only getting $1 a year, that's practically free.

Trump lives in a government-funded house with paid government funded utilities eating government-funded food. Basically like welfare.

This is a terrible statement to begin with, but Presidents pay for their own food unless it is a state dinner.

The American taxpayers aren't picking up the bill for the presidential beers. Aside from official state functions, the president pays for his own groceries at the end of every month.

The WH living quarters are 9000 sq ft. Even at the high end of yearly maintenance which includes the yards and gardens, it costs around $260,000 to cover the costs of the living quarters (low end is $123,000). If Trump was allowed by law, he would be taking no salary. So, if it was up to Trump, the country would actually come out ahead in the deal.

This was your reply to this:

He's closer to the furloughed workers in terms of government pay than Congress is

Congrats on making his point for him.

Common myth, while the president does not pay rent while living in the White House, he is billed monthly for a large portion of the expenses incurred, including all meals for the president and family that are not part of a official function.

"Bush wrote that a bill came monthly, itemizing everything she and her family owed, including food, dry cleaning and hourly wages for waiters and cleanup crews at private parties.

"There were some costs that I was not prepared for," Bush wrote. "I was amazed by the sheer number of designer clothes that I was expected to buy, like the women before me, to meet the expectations for a first lady."
