Democrats can get everything they want if they give Trump a wall.

How petty?
Coming from the right side and concerned about spending it's a heavy costs for a wall. But the Democrats get all their pet programs funded for the measly costs of a wall. If they were not so emotionally invested in hurting Trump's feelings they'd probably think logically about this shutdown situation. Conceding to the wall is probably the biggest budget win Nancy and Schumer will have in their careers. Big spending. And they love spending. But TDS is obstructing their senses. They are incapable of thinking logically under the spell of Trump.

Make this offer, and it will pass. Republicans have not yet made this offer.

No it won't. Pelsoi and Schumer already said the wall is a non-starter in any negotiations.
They oppose the wall because they know that for every major campaign promise Trump fulfills, it just makes his re-election in 2020 even more likely.

It's funny because on the one hand you guys say that Trump's 2020 election depends on the wall, and now some of you are saying that Dems are stupid to not accept a deal. Do you not see the connection?
I know you're all riled up but it makes little political sense to give Trump the wall. That's it. You can stop the debate right there. It's not over border security. It's not because they hate Trump (though I'm sure many do). It's because the wall invigorates support for Trump now and in the future.

I haven't heard this.

Let me explain. Giving Trump the wall gives him his #1 campaign promise. It legitimizes Trump in the eyes of his supporters. It gives him a huge political push going forward into 2020 at a time when Democrats are taking over the house....
It's his last chance to get something big done before obstruction and/or bipartisan deals are the only way forward

His supporters are not going away. If they get a little disgruntled all they have to do is look at the other side.

The Dems are painted into a corner. Any deal that gets Trump the Wall, regardless of how much the Rs give up, is a huge win for Trump. This is just like the impeachment nonsense, Dems have taken such an extreme position that anything less than removal from office by the Senate will be a win for Trump.

Dems are fricked either way. Give the wall and he can tout it as a win.
Resist the wall and it becomes a rallying point for 2020 and you have 2016 Part 2
The reality and the main reason Dems don't want the wall is because they know it will decimate their voter base going forward and since the turned their backs on the rust belt they absolutely depend on illegal population.
You gets points for admitting the Dem obstruction of the wall is purely self-serving.

Dems know that if wall goes up they stand ZERO chance of winning in 2020. Everything else is white noise and irrelevant to the narrative.

The only one painted into a corner is Trump. He's had 2 years to get wall funding, but couldn't get it because it didn't even have broad republican support. Dems just made huge gains in the 2018 midterms against a Republican message of immigration, so public support is mostly behind the Dems in this fight. Trump has also balked at least two times on deals he originally agreed to and shown himself to be a bad faith negotiator.

Yeah, calling for the re-opening of government and saving the wall debate for another day is such an extreme position.

Is that a trade you really want to make???

quote:Yes. they actually have. The problem? Dems would still not fund the wall. They "approved" $25B, but funded basically nothing. They stranded every "Dreamer" in the process.
Republicans have not yet made this offer.

Dems know they can't get anything as important to their power as open borders.
