someone in the other thread was talking about this and was going to do a test and put several shotguns with varying safety types on the ground and let his dogs play on them and see what happened

but I would bet that it might be possible but not probable, mistakes were made, and now he is suffering from them....take away message, not to bash the injured but we should all learn and let this be a reminder to be extra diligent around guns

Yeah this is where I shake out. I thought it sounded implausible, but I know a dog moving and jumping around can accidentally get into all sorts of stuff I never would've thought possible.

Regardless, it's a grim reminder about how diligent we need to be with gun safety. At a minimum, the gun should've been propped upright to prevent anyone being in the line of fire, but in reality it should've had the shell removed from the chamber.

I'm as guilty as any about moving places and wanting to stay loaded in the inevitable event a duck comes by. Sad, sad story and I can't imagine being on that hunt.

These are always important lessons with every horror story. A lot of people get comfortable when they're in the blind or out at the camp with buddies, but you simply cannot ever, ever let your guard down or breach any of the basic safety rules.

My safety is a push-button on the back portion of the trigger guard. I can definitely see it happening since dogs have multiple toes

Pretty scary how fast things can happen. Dude that was hunting the same property as me in Kentucky this year went to unload his gun and popped a round off on accident. Fortunately he was aiming in a safe direction.

Yes. Haven't seen it -- but unless I'm not thinking this thru fully, could happen with a Beretta just like the victim said.

Beretta with safety that moves left-right thru rear of trigger guard (behind the trigger):

a. Set up for right handed shooter - pushing the safety button from left to right side of the receiver would activate the safety.

b. Lay gun on it's left side. Safety button now protrudes up/out from trigger guard.

c. Dog lands on trigger guard. One toenail deactivates pushes on the safety button (deactivating the safety) and a different (or the same) toenail enters the trigger guard and presses the trigger.

If safety button is reversed for a left-handed shooter, laying the gun down on its right side could lead to the same result.

Just unload the damn guns.

I’ve seen/heard of it happening two other times besides this incident. One was on a four wheeler seat and dog jumped on wheeler and stepped on safety/trigger and gun went off. Another time loaded gun laying in bottom of personal friends boat after a hunt dog jumped in boat and same thing happened. It blew a hole in side of boat. Thankfully no one was injured in those occurrences. Moral of story unload weapon as soon as you are done hunting. I am glad my old man over stressed gun safety when I was younger. Just can’t let guard down about it.
