re: The committee's 4th team has won the playoffs 40% of the time

Yup. But we'd still be in the playoffs this year under an 8 team

quote:Sure
Just go to 8 teams and make the Ohio State- Michigan game meaningless this year
And then make the big 10, acc, big 12, and pac 10 champ games 1000x more meaningful
You didn’t think that one through did you?
Posted on 1/8/19 at 2:49 pm to Mr Perfect
Maybe. Or maybe you get bumped out for Washington.
Posted on 1/8/19 at 2:51 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
Well...either scenario is mind numbingly dumb as Washington and Michigan do not deserve playoff opportunities.

One of those is not like the other.

Well an ideal world you could adjust the playoffs each year depending on who is deserving. Some years only two. Some years a 6 team playoff. But that's impossible
It's a rare find to say at the end of year more than 5 teams deserve a chance though.
That's why these arguments are lost on me. Why should Michigan go? Washington? UCF? They all proved they didn't belong

No, because the last team in has won 40% of the time, there is too much of a possibility we are leaving the best team out
Also, March Madness has 64 or however many teams, does the #1 overall team always win? If not, do they need to expand?

I think there is a damn good probability the two teams that made the playoff would have been the losers there......

quote:Sounds like you're underestimating the variance of a 1 game sample size as well as overstating the difference between a #1 and a #4 team IMO.
It goes to show we dont know as much shite as we think about a regular season with over 100 teams where cross conference play is limited

My ultimate wish is you set a guaranteed way for a power 5 team to know what they need to do (sorry lower teams, you should form your own league or accept it. There just isnt equity at all in the differences)
8 teams, conference champs are guaranteed with 3 wild cards
Are there quirky years where someone like Northwester wins the big 10 this year? Of course. But every single p5 team had a clear cut way to play their way in on the field without the opinions of any human being or computer
Also, with the space for 3 wildcards, that almost entirely clears up the "quirk" from above anyway
I understand many will hate my opinion, but I can sleep well and I think players can too knowing they 100% have a chance to settle it on the field when the season starts

I truly believe expanding to any more than 4 teams would bastardize college football to a point that would ruin the game.
I don't think so. I think auto qualifiers adds far more intrigue when 60 P5 teams have a clearly defined way to make the playoffs.

Because every team left complaining still 100% had the clear opportunity to make the playoffs

Quit hatin on expansion bro.
6 is the perfect #
But I hate giving automatic berths to conference champs.

Because if 4 out of 120+ isn't enough, I don't see how 8 is the magic number then. And if #6 and #7 win a couple of times, then will you push for 16?
I want every P5 team to know what they need to go to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.
How anyone can advocate for a system that allows you to go undefeated and get left out is mind blowing to me, particularly in a P5 conference.
