I've been playing Don't Starve Shipwrecked for a few weeks. I think I was up to about Day 200 as the dry season ended. I was in the Volcano for the end of the dry season. When I exited the volcano, the dry season reset. I still had all the items from the dry season, but the date was pushed back to the start of the dry season. I went through the dry season again, same thing happened. Anyone who has played, knows the dry season sucks. You would not want it to be Ground Hog Day during the dry season. End of game.

I also had about a 75% run of Dragon Age Origins end because I sold every single item to the same vendor to get the bonus gold and it killed my save file about 75% in.

What are your game ending save file corruption tales of woe?

I was almost at 100% for Jet Force Gemini for the n64 when it crashed. Didn't have an issue with that kind of crash until I was at about 94% on Red Dead Redemption (1).

I finally went back and 100% the Jet Force Gemini game when the Rare Rewind collection came out.

I fought my way through Final Fantasy 13.

After putting up with the worst character of all time, Hope Estheim, and his incessant whining, dealing with a shoddy battle system, and just an all around not enjoyable experience, I make it to the final boss...

And my fricking save corrupts.

I did most of the side quests and extra battles too.

I actually went to Gamestop and sold it to them that day.

I am tempted to make a joke about reaching the end of Mass Effect 3 only to have a game ending bug where nothing made sense but I think that dead horse has been beat enough.

Sunless Sea would be the culprit for me. The game is usually played with only one save. If your character dies, he dies and you roll up a new character who gets some of his things. I was 4 Captains into the legacy and had passed down a ton of money, a mansion, and quite a bit more good stuff when poof. The save went kerfloogedy on me.

I was not a happy camper. Its still a fun, if a bit slow paced, game.

My main Morrowind file back on the original Xbox got corrupted with dozens of hours of play. I think it was because I put too many items on the floor of my player home.

Don't Starve is that way. If you die, the save file is deleted.

I really hate the single save file because if it glitches, it's all over.

Minecraft PS3 a few years ago. Creative mode. Had a medieval kingdom I was building. Had 400 hours into it and had been building the kingdom for 2+ years off and on. Saved and exited. Loaded up a few days later, wouldn't load- save file corrupted. Tried to recover previous save from PSN cloud but the corrupted save had uploaded and corrupted all other saves as well, somehow.

Now, all I have are a few screenshots to remind me of what once was. But now I have an even more massive kingdom on PS4. If it corrupts too, I'm fricking done

Not necessarily a save corruption, but the first game I got with my PS4 was ‘The Last of Us’

Played like two hours and encountered a game breaking bug that would have forced me to restart the entire save after researching online.

Never played the game again.

My GTA IV save file got corrupted at about 75% completion on the main story because I ran out of HD space on my PC.

Luckily I found a website on the internet where, after much trouble, I downloaded a save game that stopped at the mission I left off. Had to remove GFWL from the game and downgrade to the version before the latest update in order to get it all to work.

GTA IV on PC doesn't have Steam cloudsave support either which I found astounding.

I 100% Witcher three, yes all the Skellige boats too, and GOG didn't have cloud saves at the time, lost it all.

I gave up on the 100% even with the fast as hell sailboat mod. Had almost all of them and just burned out. It was my 3rd playthrough so I was done.

It was my 2nd play through, I usually do about 50% on the 1st and then want to see the ending, on my 2nd I go ham and do it all in most games.

I never beat Resident Evil: Nemesis due to it.

Got to the part where you take off in the helicopter as the Nemesis shoots it down. Game froze. Went to reload to try again, file corrupted.

Never knew how that one ended.

With any luck, they will be remaking it for PS5, so you’ll get another chance

One time I saved over my brothers 100 hour game file of FFX. He’s still bitter about it today.

Played Fallout 2, got about halfway through the game, got a corrupted save file that not only killed my save but also perma-killed any character I’d killed in that run.

Couldn’t even start over without reinstalling the game to fix the issue.

You're THAT little brother, huh? I still make fun of my little brother for the games he's done that to me with.

Oh boy...the worst memory ever.

Back when Pokémon red was big, I decided to do a game shark mod for infinite health. It was a good perk, made the Pokémon invincible, but that was ultimately what screwed me.

So I was playing the final gym and I had gotten through all but two trainers. I think you had a meter for attacks or whatever and if it ran too low, your attack for the round was struggle or something which only did minimal damage. Well the perk wasn’t good for keeping this attack meter filled, and what happened was on the second to last trainer the attack energy on all my Pokémon ran out. But I had dealt just enough damage to win that round.

Then I made the mistake of saving. So with literally the last trainer left, I had to fight using struggle against what was the strongest Pokémon in the game. And while I thought I’d be able to nickle and dime my way through the whole boss fight, the boss was able to heal itself, way more than the damage I’d do each round. If my Pokémon were to die, I’d wake up in the hospital outside the gym and could go on with the game. But since the perk wasn’t reversible my guys would have infinite help and keep getting hit. It turned out to be an endless cycle of taking damage, and it healing itself. Never was able to play it after that.

I know at a few points in my gaming career, I saved the game seconds before entering an unwinnable fight. Not knowing it was unwinnable. Thus ending my game.
