I just randomly started looking up the 1990's LSU football history online and found this NY Times article previewing the top 20 teams preseason and about shite in myself when I saw how highly ranked they were.

Yep, remember that. Lost to Auburn at home and dropped to 14 and then beat #1 Florida in that famous game. That was a talented team.

It only took Alabama over twenty years to pay LSU back.

I don’t know why people think EVERY year in the 80’s and 90’s were terrible. The 80’s saw two SEC Championships and the mid to late 90’s LSU was better than just about everyone in the SEC not named Florida or Tennessee.

If I remember correctly, Jamie Howard's recruiting class, which would have been around 1992 or so, was ranked number one in the country

84-88 was actually THE most wins in any five years in program history. So yeah Arnsparger was a winner and 87 was NC quality. It was also when I was in college so I remember it vividly.

97 I was a Buffs season ticket holder and they ended up to be a Rick New Weasel shite show. I came home for at least one LSU game that year and I remember thinking how weird it was that LSU was better than the Buffs . That’s how weird the 90s were.

You have to remember we started top 10 in 1998 as well. #8.

Faulk returns, seems like we are all set to blow up, and the fricking wheels fall off.

Smoke Auburn on the road, move up to #6, then a great although frustrating game against UGA, then drop games to UF and fricking Tim Couch and Mike Leach in Kentucky.

Get a win over a really good MSU team to steady the ship a bit and then fricking 0-4 down the stretch.

Just none of it made sense.

As a DiNardo guy, how could you not be after 95-97, it was painful watching things unravel.

Then failing to make changes that offseason led to the undeniable 99 debacle of a season.

I truly hope the O fans don’t find themselves in a similar position at some point, not that things will ever get to that 99 level again, because it sucks watching someone you had so much faith in just blow it.

Of course it worked out great in the long run, so change isn’t always a bad thing if the administration is willing to do what it takes to find the best the country has to offer

Only idiots think this, the 80's were a very good decade, for the most part. The bad years were 89-94.

The most frustrating loss was Auburn when Diesel created his legend. He had like 230 yards on about 20 or so carries and should have had more. DiNardo decided to pass on third and two when a first down would have essentially sealed the victory. Imagine that team if Diesel hadn’t broken his leg.

I went to that game in Tuscaloosa. It was depressing. There was no real enthusiasm by Alabama fans before, during, or after the game - it was like they were showing up out of habit. Say what you will about losing 8 in a row, at least many LSU fans think we can win each year and show some enthusiasm. The Alabama fans’ reaction to a little adversity showed me a lot about their character.

1989 LSU was preseason #5 as well. We finished 4-7 and the national underachiever even with Tommy making All SEC. I felt bad for those seniors: Tommy, Dundee, Moss, Clint James, Jay Egloff, etc. Awesome guys!

The year that began the slide.......
