Catfish “Jug” Lines

Recently finished up 2 doz “ jugs” (pool noodle type) and looking to put some meat in the freezer. Pretty much will be new to this (have done it with others, along for the ride kind of thing while haveing a frew brews).
What’s your go to baits? Chicken? Perch? Hot dogs? Maybe something really cool I don’t even know about? Seems like everyone has a special combination.
Strategy when setting?
Just looking for some guidance from any with experience.
TIA

There's a meat eater episode on this. May be helpful to watch? At least it's entertaining.
Just a thought.

I use chicken livers mostly. Or cut up bars of ivory soap into cubes. They love it and it stays on the hook better.
Ol boy I work with from Monroe says he puts Oragel on the hook so it numbs when they bite. They won’t try to get off as much. Sounds like some yankee arse shite though

This is the stuff I’m talking about. So interesting how everyone has their own method.

Chicken livers, just dont leave a lot of meat hanging off the hook. Wrap and hook the excess so they can't tear it it off

Small crawfish
Live bream
Chicken liver
Calf heart
You can catch catfish on damn near anything but live bream will catch the Apps better.

I bait my lines with mullet or crawfish.

We set "set lines" and typically use live buffalo. If you can get your hands on some of that, its what id suggest.

Depends on what I’m targeting. Blues and Channels I use liver, cold worms or cut bait. Flatheads goldfish or live bream/sun perch.

My go to to on jugging or trot lines are the little white crawfish that come from roadside ditches.
Get you a dip net with tiny holes and try a few ditches along the road and put in 5 gallon bucket. I’ve caught a lot and good size catfish off the ditch crawfish.
ETA: Goldfish are the GOAT but illegal to use in LA. Like someone above stated for flat heads, use live bream. Also a tiny little live mudcat works well. My grandfather used to do this and he caught some huge fish at Belle River and Verrett

You may have just started the great “are goldfish illegal” debate.

We used to run 100+ noodles every weekend on dead lakes but have transitioned to bank poles over the years.
Save yourself some headache and get both livers and gizzards. Put them both in the same bag and let them sit over night. You can add garlic or any other scent to the bag but I don’t think it makes a difference. The idea is to get the gizzards soaked in blood from the liver. Gizzards will stay on the hook 1000x better than liver, chop them into quarters so they go farther, it really doesn’t take much, and tip the hook with a bit of liver.
Another practical thing, attach a split shot to the line a few inches above the hook. It shouldn’t be so heavy that it will tip the noodle in the water, but big enough that it will catch on a gaff. This makes baiting and resetting much easier, an unweighted hook will slide through a gaff every time, it’s science.
As others have said flatheads are predators and targeting them is a different game. This is why we’ve moved to bank poles and live bait. They also require specific sets that could honestly be a different thread.
Have fun, a jon boat with a 9.9 and good lights, and an ice chest full of beer is a hell of a time.

You can buy a case of frozen chicken hearts for about $3. Cut them in half. Put fresh hearts on after about 4-6 hrs. The hearts are tough, stay on the hook even after you catch a hook and hold blood/scent pretty well. We use hearts on trot lines and on jugs when we're not targeting white perch using shiners. Usually on jugs we just use shiners because a catfish will bite that too, but a white perch won't touch catfish bait. We usually do pretty well in late spring catching catfish on yo-yo's too.

He's talking about stump lines or limb lines. Just some black twine tied to a tree with a big hook and some weight on it. Works really well in the summer months. We use live bream as big as you can catch with a 12/0 hook and a roll of lead tape wrapped around the line about 18" up from the hook. You can catch some big Opp's on those dudes.

BIG cats.. live small bream... medium cats cut bream or shad.
Hot dogs lightly cooked with lots of garlic an anise on them is money for all sizes...
if you put a piece of pvc through the hole in the noodle and put a piece of rebar in it... you have a built in strike indicator.

I used shrimp (peel on) last year. I let them get kind of stinky and then cut in half. Hook through and then back in.

Got ya. Never heard that before.
Appreciate all the info from everyone. Next question is where do I buy all this stuff? Hearts, livers and gizzards and such.
Also is this a good time of year to run lines or does hat even matter for cats?
