Home theater conundrum

I recently bought a refurbed Yamaha RX-A1060 from Accessories4less. The first one I was having some problems and sent back for a different one. With the 2nd one I am having some slightly different issues and asked for a refund. I was told by support that the issue is my speakers are inefficient and need better ones for this receiver (to be fair they mentioned this may be an issue the first time).
I now have 2 options:
1. Buy one of the speaker sets that they recommended and hope that works. ($280)
2. Buy a cheaper/older receiver and hope that it works with my speakers. (I would end up saving $100 after restocking fees and shipping it back)
Any opinions on the situation?

What exactly is the issue and why are they claiming your speakers are inefficient?
What’s the receivers output?
What’s your speakers ratings? Resistance and sensitivity?

ALL of this. What they are saying is basically bullshite unless you have an incredibly strange setup.

Yamaha RX-A1060
The speakers are Yamaha NS-B40 and NS-C40 speakers. I can’t find exactly specs on them but both at 6ohms 100watts.
The first one did some very strange stuff where individual speaker volumes would fluctuate while turning the volume up and down. At some points nothing but 7 ch straight would be audible.
On this 2nd one, the protection circuitry keeps tripping as if there’s a fault. There’s a loud noise from the back right speaker each time before the unit cuts off. I checked all my connection points for stray wires and found nothing. I then swapped the corresponding speaker to see if the problem followed and it didn’t. Then I swapped the connection in the back of the unit figuring if it was wiring it would stay on the same side, if it followed it was the receiver. Sure enough it has followed.
And yes, I have switched the impedance from 8 ohms to 6 ohms on the unit.

Buy speakers from a speaker company. Yamaha does not make great speakers. You’re going to get what you pay for and speakers should be a large portion of the budget.

Do you own a meter ? Check the speaker resistance at the amp.

Guessing maybe its something to do with 6 ohms? if so, either go with another brand receiver or get some better speakers. Maybe just start with two decent L/R's and a Center if you can afford it. Speaker tech doesnt change that much, spend your money there, it will last longer.

I’m a fricking idiot. I have 2 kickers on my 2nd zone that are much more powerful. Should be able to plug those into where I think the problem is, change the impedance back to 8 and ops check.

You have any frayed or exposed speaker wire by any chance that may be coming into contact with something that could be interfering with its signal? Be sure you don’t have any polarity crossed up.

Yeah, I checked all that during when it acted up this second time.
I’ve had the receiver connected to my kickers on the back patio for a while now and have had no problems. Weird stuff. Guess I need to upgrade the speakers then.
I’ll take another poster’s suggestion and upgrade the front channel now then donthe back later.

one of your speakers may have some f'ed up internal wiring or something causing some amplifier chaos that is activating the protection circuitry.
Have you tried disconnecting one speaker at a time in an effort to potentially isolate the problem?

Yeah that was one of the first things I did. Biggest problem has been the inconsistency in the faults. I went a week or so without problems then would have some constantly

I don't buy the speaker inefficiency thing. It's usually the other way around where the avr doesn't have enough juice to drive the speakers. Sounds like a setup or settings issue.

Yeah I’m returning the receiver. The receiver is cutting off after a few minutes just with the two kicker speakers on. I’ve done it attached to multiple points on the receiver including both zones.

Just curious when you say kicker speakers are you talking about car audio speakers ?

This sounds like a problem with cabling possibly inside the walls. I also wouldn't be using car audio speakers with a home av receiver.

How do you have the receiver configured for speakers? They are right in that those are very inefficient speakers. Exctly how many speakers are you hooking up to your amp and to what speaker terminals?
