re: Utah to drop blood alcohol limit to .05

There's a plethora of things which would impair a person's ability to drive more than a .05 BAC would. Phone usage, fatigue, stress, doing makeup, telling the kids in the backseat to shut up, etc. etc. Should we start arresting these people too? Maybe we should all just Uber everywhere and all the time just to be safe. Hopefully the Uber drivers aren't tired or stressed either.
But the other plethora of reasons don’t account for 1/3 of traffic deaths. Alcohol accounts for 32%, speed 31%, distracted driving 16% and weather 11%.
A simple solution would be don’t make the choice to drink and drive. As I stated before, I don’t know if I agree with .05. You have a lot of factors. Say you have a guy who is 220 lbs and has been drinking for 10 years 2-5 a month. He consumes two beers at dinner, and drives. His ability to drive will not be diminished compared to a 110 lb female who has never drank before.
I don’t believe this will be implemented throughout the US.

I occasionally have a few beers after work across the street from my office for a meeting with a vendor or whatever. I usually keep it to 2. I'm not leaving my vehicle near work, taking an Uber home, waking up and taking an Uber to bring my kid to school and back to my vehicle because I had 2 beers. A big cup of coffee gives me more of a buzz.
I understand your frustration. If it’s a law and it is enforced, it’s better not to risk it and drink in a safe manner.

Ah, but we're not talking about ALL alcohol-related fatalities. We're talking about .08 and below.
Which - in 2010 - accounted for 5% of traffic fatalities.
So yes, distracted driving is basically 3x more problematic than people driving around with .06 BACs.
Being against this law doesn't mean I support drinking and driving. It means I am against criminalizing the behavior of millions of - otherwise law-abiding - people.
When I say "millions" I am referring to if this law were to be hypothetically enacted across the U.S.
How many in Utah alone? Dunno. But I'd be willing to bet there are at least 100,000 folks in a state of 3.1 million driving around with a .05-.07 BAC on any given Friday or Saturday evening.

This. The only place you should drink is in prison

Correct. BAC under .08 account for roughly 5% of deaths per year, or approximately 2000. Which is a small number in the big picture. But none the less 2000 too many.
I understand the argument of millions of Americans drive at .01-.07 daily. But imagine the percentage who A. Never get caught B. Can’t handle their alcohol even at .05.
It’s impossible to measure an impaired level below .08. As I stated before, I personally don’t believe this will be a nationwide thing anytime soon.

.05 isnt a drunk driver.

You’re 10x more likely to be killed in a wreck by someone with a BAC of .00 than by one between .01 to .07. More wrecks are caused by inexperienced teenage drivers or people fricking with their phones and driving. Maybe we should start by enforcing the existing laws instead of creating new ones. Its illegal to text and drive but I see people doing it every day. And I got rear ended by a woman about 2 years ago that I’m convinced was on her phone and not paying attention to the road. Start writing tickets for texting and driving, and stop giving slaps on the wrist with a fine and probation for 1st and 2nd offense DWI’s. Suspend licenses for a year for 1st offense and hit them with a ton of community service hours. People will start thinking twice about it. But its ridiculous to say .05 is impaired

Lol making excuses. No one thinks texting while driving is a good idea either. It's illegal in several states
How pathetic are some of you? Honestly

Not a snowflake. Two glasses of wine will not put me over. Expecilly with a large meal with appetizer. Plus when I go out to a nice restaurant I usually spend close to two hours enjoying myself. Don’t judge everyone by the same criteria.

What about the fact that alcohol probably had little to do with these deaths? People get in wrecks all the time. Most of those happening with under the legal limit would have happened anyway.

I can't speak for the rest of the state, but there is no need to drive in Salt Lake City. Between Uber and the public transit system, you can get anywhere at any time without having to drive.

We should just ban driving all together then since 2/3 of traffic fatalities are caused by drivers who have .00 BAC
.05 to .07 isn't impaired. Below .10 isn't even impaired IMO, but I'm not going to argue against the .08 threshold. But .05 is bullshite. I really hope you're trolling and not this dense.

Don’t forget that the margin of error for most breathalyzers is around.05. DUI law is one of the most hideously unjust portions of our legal system.

I'm convinced that some of these people would prefer to reimplement Prohibition
