What do you consider a cull buck

In the stand and had a deer come out that obviously was older than a year and a half and had about 14-16 in spikes. Never got close enough so I didn’t shoot but it made me think a little and now I’m curious as to what others consider a cull.

16” spikes, I’d say well over 1.5

that wasn't a cull...now if he stays that way for the next year or two, something ain't right

What would you say is a cull?

In my opinion if a deer is 2 and still a spike that’s about as sure of a cull as you get.

I'm just betting he's 1.5 yo or younger... if you keep enough game cams out and keep a good inventory, you will probably see that deer be a huge 4 or more probable a young six next year...of course I don't know your habitat food sources etc...
but if you see that same deer next year and it's still a spike, cull him!
People are so quick to call cull on a large spike...wanting it to be because you just want some meat doesn't make it so... Most of the time it's because they didn't age a deer properly

I'm pretty new to deer hunting but we have one spike that I saw today with one side going up 4-6 inches and the other side curled down around his eye.
I wanted to shoot him but I already have meat from a doe and decided to let the more experienced guys make that call.
Would you have shot that?

The head gear is not the determining factor for me when considering a buck to be a cull buck. It’s the combination of body size(age) and the antlers. If I had a spike with 14” spikes in front of me but it weighs 90 lbs with a pencil neck and his nuts ain’t even dropped all the way then he isn’t a cull buck. Now on the other hand if the deer weighs 170lbs and has a swole neck and a thick brisket with a sagging belly and longer snout then I’m shooting him for a cull buck.

All fair points, but I’m fairly conservative when it comes to culling a deer like that. Body/head were too big there was no way it was that young.

every buck that gets killed is a cull
he has been culled from the herd
forever

No I wouldn’t. That curl is likely from some sort of issue in velvet.
Never shoot a deer as a cull based on his antlers alone.

unless you really need the meat(that's what does are for) when in doubt, don't shoot...especially if it's not state legal.
let it walk...
put up some cameras and judge that deer next year...if it's still a crap deer on camera, put it on the hit list for the kids or a guest and then bust it.
I thought everybody had cameras and hit lists.

I’d have to see the whole deer, but I think I’d pass
