Found the issue.

We all have different definitions here.

Those online communities are where these kids live now. It's the same as bugging a plant.

Kids run off to the woods to talk about titties and how fine someone's hot sister, etc. They now do it in these chats, etc.

Ignore the General Chat and/or Public Chat. That is another issue but it's basically a school yard but in the written form.

rational solution would be turning the chat option off unless the child says he's wanting to squad up with friends,

Yes.

Spying does nothing but make your child hate you. Unless there is a problem which leads to you requiring to monitor.

Over cautious parents raise the craziest adults as do the shittiest parents with no filter.

Honestly, re reading the OP, perhaps it was an empty "threat" and he wanted to make it sure it was something he could actually do in case his son calls his bluff

Like "dad, you can't actually do that".

I'm trying to think about what I was doing at 10. I'm pretty sure I didn't start online gaming until around 13. At 10 I was outside 95% of the time. I was still getting in trouble for going out to play in my school clothes rather than spending too much time playing games.

When I was 10, the NES wasn't even released

So you didn't grow up where the social world was on AIM and ICQ.

AIM wasn't a big thing until I was in college. That dial up noise and endless hours in chat rooms. Lots of wasted time.

All that context he gave us. Why would we NOT fill in the blanks with our realities and fears.

But he came back and said, "he got his answer" and not to worry about context. You would have received much better solutions with a context. He is acting like any context about his child is like posting his child's GPS coordinates.

The guy seems short-sighted.

Oh really bird?

Can only do it on PC. Final answer.

Shouldn't you be playing Spy Kids?

Go check the OP and tell me which one of us is the one with the weird take.

Unless he's playing on PC, then buying bugs or camera is really the only option.

But if you ever hear something and react to that, your kid will know you’ve been spying on him. Which would probably create some trust issues.

Are people reading the OP? He already tells his son he has the chat transcripts.
