your answer depends on the barn
I agree, the barn I am around in Tennessee, 4 out of 5 horse owners do not pay for their horses or board themselves.

Yes I have a chip. Because I work hard as hell to pay for mine
That's great, and how it should be. However, I have met many where this is not the case.

First I’ve heard of it. Maybe western? Not completely sure.
Ocala and Lexington also claim that title. And Virginia as well.

I will not argue that most of us aren’t crazy, though.
Rich and poor, we are all nuts

If you want to meet the kids who love horses and pay for their own at a show barn, show up at night, they'll be there braiding manes and tails for their entry money the next day.

you'd love this barn, I stayed at a ranch years ago, owned by an old actor, Dale Robertson, who was into horses as a hobby, was wandering around his house, turned down a hallway that had a beautiful set of huge wooden doors at the end, went through, it was the entrance to a climate controlled barn, walls were padded, don't know how many stalls but the hall containing them was perpendicular to the hall I had entered from and looked to be more than a 100' in either direction, had a exercise swimming pool for the horses, the place was spotless, immaculate, didn't do too much exploring to see what other amenities there were but it was pretty impressive, and this was a loooong time ago, I'm sure there are some pretty plush digs for high end horses

And grooming, and cleaning stalls.
Now that I’ve got one who will probably end up a hunter I’ll have to learn to braid grew up in a different discipline.

Are we talking about equestrian show girls or sod of the earth farm horse girl?

All without a rich daddy or husband.

I can teach you how to braid. I learned when I was in short stirrup so we wouldn't have to pay for it.
no rich daddy here. My grandparents did fund a lot of my horse addiction but I was still doing it on a $700 pony from a dump and then a free horse that I traded my other pony for when I was 14.
the majority of the local riders are much more hands on and work hard. it's when you start going to the rated shows that you find the uber rich snobby types that don't always get as dirty as the rest of us.
one day, i put on a pair of clean jeans that had never been to the barn. I found a shaving in the pocket. No clue how it got there.

I’m sure you get pissy when people frick up plane talk.
Fun Fact: All male pilots have a speech impediment that makes them completely unintelligible over intercom systems.

you should listen to a female voice over the radio, something about the frequency/pitch that makes it sound worse than nails on a chalkboard, makes me cringe and think "get your arse back in the kitchen already!"
"ETA: And horse girls are awesome!"

Wow, in a thread rife with gross generalizations, you out-generalized me.
Aspy, you should link that funny post about dating a horse girl here.
ETA: Also, Mr. Fake Pilot Man, those of us actually in the biz refer to the kitchen as the galley

get back in the kitchen galley hag!!!(or sometimes referred to as galley slave!!!)
way back when, when a woman transmitted on the radio, wasn't to uncommon to hear someone else say something like, "shouldn't be letting the flight attendant talk on the radio," or "ah, daddy let his little girl talk on the radio"
