This cannot be preached enough. ALL Americans should take not and prepare.
We've put away enough preps to go a year without electricity, gas, food from Grocery stores, etc.
Live by scrooster's rule of the Six Fs.
Fresh Water
Food
Fuel
Fire
First Aid
Fire Arms
Have redundant ways to provide plenty of fresh clean water. We've got three Wells on my property, a pond, we're near a lake, and we have a spring. We have several ways to purify water using chemicals (chlorine and iodine), mechanical filters and gravity filters, and boiling.
Food ... too much to list but 5 gal buckets vacuum packed rice, beans, protein, spices and condiments, soy sauce, etc., etc., etc.
Fuel ... mainly for generators but also for gas stoves. Also, firewood is a biggie. And we can distill on the property to make ethanol.
Fire ... have redundant ways to make fire and places to make fire. That means firewood as well.
First Aid ... extra prescription drugs, build up you cache. Have books that show you how to survive without a doctor. I recommend "When there is no Doctor" and "When there is no Dentist." Read them in advance and follow their advice for items to keep on hand. Lots of antibiotics ... did you know that you can use bovine, etc., antibiotics in an emergency and they could save your life.
Firearms and lots of ammo. Shotgun, pistol and rifle minimum and know how to use them.
Prep now ... it's insurance for your family.

Some estimates have it as high as 90% if nationwide... six months is a long time to do without power, transportation, medical, etc...

The hide under your desk method for a nuclear bomb was interesting. I guess it could possibly prevent you from getting killed initially if you weren’t inside the zone that gets vaporized instantly.
You would still get radiation poisoning though.

I was working in L.A. and explained this to one of the guys I was working with who lived out there. We got to talking about guns and I told him about post Katrina. Don't kid yourself, civilization is a very thin veneer. Your caveman instincts are nothing more than a large natural disaster away.

This is all scary, but I'd hope we'd at least have continued access to TigerDroppings. TD is powered by hamsters after all.

IN! Cast Nets, couple of Monkey Grinders (thanks to friends that worked for Southern Bell at the time)too. Sadly, lost firearms to burglary.
For those who have not considered such things could happen and are not prepared and don't know where to start in preparations. I offer this link: LINK It is a free General Preparedness Manual written by and for members of the LDS Church, but not endorsed or produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It's very thorough. PDF format.

I mean if you need more than a couple weeks of stuff than you better be in a underground bunker to avoid the mob coming after you. Than you figure no power at nuclear power plants pretty much KO everything anyway

Yep. When I was in high school, Alas, Babylon was required reading. It scared the shite out of me. Thus, I am where I am today in that respect.

Absolutely. People stampede and kill others over discounts on washcloths and toasters on black friday. Something like this would cause an ELE.
