Your assumption is based on your limited life experience.
Why didn't start college until I was 22 so I know what it's like be educated in a workforce and I know what it's like to be educated in college. I'm thankful for every day that I was able to learn in school.

There are many types of welders in the world and in may cases they must go thru rigorous training to do their job.
I'm not saying their jobs aren't hard but I think it's a little sophomoric to say that a welder is smarter. I'm not saying a welder is dumber nor am I saying they are smarter. But that same welder would probably be smarter if we went to school and learned 120 + curriculum hours in and organized and thoughtful environment.
quote:
Getting a degree in Womerns' Studies isn't nearly as impressive as learning to become an underwater welder and I would gather that in most cases, yes, the person who is the underwater welder is smarter than the blue-haired freak who got their degree by parroting the party line.
Sounds like you have a bias based on an associative stereotype

It is ignorant to do anything other than judge them on a case by case basis.
People like you feel the need to put people into neat little boxes.

They love gubment cheese.

And for the record, if 90% of the so called "intellectuals" died today, the world would be fine, however, if 90% of the welders/plumbers/garbagemen died we are in a world of zhit.
Would probably encourage Automation in those areas. Adversity creates evolution

No, just great observational skills.

I find this statement a little ironic until I realized that you didn't realize that I was responding to someone who did that very thing and I was trying to correct it. You should look at when I was replying to before you make an assumption

Thats how things start the process of coming into reality.
let's apply this concept to....soft sciences that primarily deal in subjectivity
especially those without rigorous testing/measurement methods and groupthink as a gatekeeper
what you find is that "reality" is not actual reality

quote:Youve made this up in your head. The right has nothing against “intellectualism.” In fact, if you look at political “intellectuals” on the Internet today you’ll find that the majority of them are right wing. Academia =\= intellectualism. That’s a myth
the Right’s adversity to intellectualism in current politics. To be labeled an intellectual by the right these days is typically a negative charge—but part of that adversity to “intellectualism” is troubling to me.

No, no assumption, it's directed toward you.
You have a history of painting those you disagree with a broad brush.
You have a history of seeing the world thru your own particular, narrow world view.
Your ego and overblown sense of self forces you to do so.

Every college professor I ever had was a socially dysfunctional, cat hair covered mess.
This was NOT the case in the College of Business AT ALL, and only applied to about 1/4 of my law professors.

These 'intellectuals' are caught up in the group-think that = "if only the world worked this way, everything would be easy." They are constantly looking for the anti-gravity machine or the perpetual motion system.
this isn't even really true
most everything of note in the soft sciences, from a founational perspective, has already been crafted, discussed, disected, etc
what these academics primarily rely upon to create novelty is deconstruction practices. they're trying to attack societal foundations and accepted beliefs so that they can get those ideas published. this is why they latch onto overlapping ideas like postmodernism, b/c much of that philosophy is a similar deconstruction (of truth, on a much more general level)

Well, you just described 90% of this board.

Perhaps true, but Ebb is a huge narcissist so naturally it's a target.
Everyone loves the smell of their own farts, but most have the sense enough to know they stink and the decency to admit it.....most Leftists do not and Ebb is a prime example.

Yeah. Generally speaking, huge difference between the guys in the Accounting school vs a poli sci professor.

Nah. Im an ENTP so understanding a multitude of perspectives entices me highly. It's the whole reason why I come here and put up counter arguments that I don't even necessarily believe sometimes. I gather perspectives.
I also understand how to speak to other perspectives once I've processed them. The person I was responding to said a welder smarter than someone who started in women's gender studies. I started off by speaking a similar language enough to show how that isn't necessarily so. Then you came in and started throwing the yellow flag without truly observing the whole conversation. Maybe those observational skills need a little polishing or maybe just stop assuming so much

well the problem is if you present intellectual/academic work that isn't part of the left's collective groupthink, you're outcast as an x-ist

quote:If application of those "critical thinking skills" relates to a mechanical challenge or "some assembly required", I'd guess your prof would underperform. It's not that he's stupid. He is just severely inexperienced (and disinterested) in real world applications.
So you believe welding makes one smarter than having to write countless papers, learn new information, use critical thinking skills, and take a baseline coursework of a multitude of subjects? Yeah, welders are probably generally smarter.
That disinterest represent a disconnect often separating fantasy from reality.
It's sort of like the manufacturing engineer who fancies himself a design genius. He never actually visits the assembly line, but assumes any problems on the line relate to blue collar ineptitude. Whereas in reality, those blue collar workers have implemented a number of workarounds to render the engineer's design functional.

Any of the new “fields” like Gender Studies are a complete waste of money. So what if you can write a paper or research something like “Dog Park Rape Culture”? Most the people that pursue such degrees are the anti-social kid that would not be able to cut it in the real world.
“Gender Studies”.....seriously?
