Can someone explain to me the LHSAA split?

Like who it was supposed to benefit and why it happened? I come from the VHSL (Virginia) and Public Schools and Private schools have been completely separated in all sports (outside of exhibition matchups) for as long as I can remember and probably since before I was born. It was very new to me to have public and private schools competing.
If I understand it correctly they still compete in the regular season but are split come playoff time?

Public schools complained that private schools had an advantage.

Short version - no one wanted to play Evangel or John Curtis.
It’s part of a 20+ year cycle of classifications playing “hot potato” to see who gets assrammed by major powers on an annua basis.

Private schools be recruiting out the hood

Unlike most states, the private schools are under the same governing body as the public. Hence, chaos.

It was supposed to benefit mainly smaller public schools in lower classifications 1-3A that could not make it to even the quarterfinals some schools complained about not even making the playoffs. Larger non-select schools for the most part did not make a huge deal about it. It really truly boiled down to two schools Evangel and John Curtis and how they were terated.
It basically came down to a societal trend, of when cannot compete its not our fault it is somebody else's. Coming from another state where it was a virtual total split as well, I always admired and would have killed for what Louisiana had for so long. Now the "split" is spreading to other sports and I predict there will be a real split as in two totally separate associations in 5-7 years.

Lots of public school principals and school board politicians just wanted something to whine and complain about.
Many public school athletic directors and football coaches were against the split, but principals are the ones who voted.

Private school were recruiting

Easy to explain..
Exhibit A:
Neville High School
2002-2004 arse whipped by Curtis. Neville has a lot of pull in the public screwing Private entity called the LHSAA. Bye bye Curtis.
Exhibit B:
West Monroe Rebels.
Only reason they didnt stuff their trophy case more was because of Evangel. Evangel was not only better on the field, but also in recruiting and coaching.
Unfair. West Monroe has the $$$$ make them work for you. Neville gas $$$ and alums.
Funny considering that WM 2000 team was stocked FULL of "Transfers". It was the perfect example of pot calling kettle.
What is telling is since this split WM has gotten worse.
Meanwhile Neville benefitted tremendously. Everyone in Monroe/WM knows what caused the split. Your answer lues here in our neck of the woods.

You can get a variety of reasons on this board about why the split happened. You can also get a variety of reasons on why the private schools will not pull out and start their own association. I do not see the big deal with the split. It’s not like the vote did not allow private schools to play or deprive them of a chance to play for a championship. It is kind of like public opinion on Trump, you either love him or hate him. When it comes to the split, you either love it or hate it.

Basically private schools had an advantage over public schools because anyone could go to their schools out of their zone. For example: here in BR, Parkview Baptist can go and put a billboard in the ghetto in North BR with the billboard saying things like come to Parkview, great education, great athletics, great opportunities to be looked at by College coaches and things like that. It will attract talented athletes to leave the poor, ghetto public schools and go to a successful private school where they have a better chance at being able to succeed in life because of their athletic abilities. They have an opportunity to improve their lives by getting out of the ghetto.
We probably would have never heard of Derius Guice if he didn’t end up transferring to Catholic instead of staying at McKinley. For one, not many college scouts want to go to a game at McKinkey High School and two he would have probably ended up, like a bunch of students who go to McKinley their entire lives, living the street and thug life and would probably be in jail or possibly even dead.
Basically the private schools could advertise for people to come to their schools which is called “recruiting” and the public schools couldn’t do that. They just had to rely on the kids that lived in their zones as the future of that schools athletic programs. The public schools just felt like they were at a disadvantage and that it wasn’t fair that they had to compete with private schools once the postseason came around.
Now, there are public schools in Louisiana that recruit and recruit quite often and get away with it. Most of the top dog public football programs in this state recruit. I may be wrong but I think the majority of the people who voted for the split were smaller public schools who did things the right way and didn’t recruit. They just don’t have good athletes that live in their zones so it was hard for them to have successful athletic programs when they competed against teams who could basically go out and get whoever they wanted.
Now I’m a public school guy, grew up in one of the best public schools in Louisiana but I am very against the split. I think the split sucks and they need to bring things back to the way they use to be.

It’s the worst. The only thing worse is the Archdiocese of New Orleans not letting the private schools pull out and start their own association.
Start a new association, then start inviting public schools. Leave Many and Winfield in the LHSAA so they can play each other for a championship every year.
Top 10 in 5A without the split:
1. West Monroe
2. John Curtis
3. Destrehan
4. Catholic
5. Acadiana
6. Rummel
7. Ehret
8. East Ascension
9. Zachary
10. Terrebonne
Nice top 10 there. Instead of that, the 3 select schools in the top 10 play in a 12 team bracket against people they already play. Boy is that fun

Way to much recruiting going in favor of private schools...pi pic schools got mad and dealt with it...you had private schools that were 1a and 2 a playing 4a, 5a cause their talent levels was out of this world cause people were moving into their zones to put their kid in said recruited school

It's called Louisiana politics. However, the top schools, public and private, schedule the better competition from the other classification.
