What’s This “Bowls are Meaningless” Narrative?

If bowls are meaningless then why were there so many threads during championship weekend hoping we get a shot at an NY6 bowl?

If bowls are meaningless then why do teams fight like hell to get bowl eligible?

If bowls are meaningless why does this place melt so hard when we lose one?

Everyone was jazzed about being in the Fiesta Bowl and then overnight bowls don’t matter? Coincidentally after Greedy decides not to play?

Bowls matter plenty to coaches, players, and fans.

I'd say two things:

1) We still hold on to the old meaning of classic bowls that just don't exist anymore. It still feels like they are, but decisions like Greedy's and others prove that they aren't really worth it.

2) While meaningless in the overall picture, they still have some effect on the idea of the quality of a team and the win/loss record. But any non-playoff team winning or losing a bowl doesn't really gain or suffer from much outside of a slightly lower/higher end of year ranking.

In short, bowls are certainly not as meaningful/exciting as they used to be, but are just better mapped to a another game in the season, adding to the win/loss record.

Just a narrative to support the theme.

I agree the players need catastrophic injury protection. They need it not only for the bowl games but every game. Believe it or not injuries happen during the regular season too, including preseason.

To balance the argument of the risk/reward of bowl participation, they attempt to make the bowls seem insignificant boost the validity of the argument.

because some of the old timers are still holding onto the idea that new year's day bowls mean something, when they've been irrelevant for decades plus.

and also marketing dollars working to try to make sure that you tune into your favorite team playing a meaningless exhibition game so that they can sell ad space on New Year's Day when a lot of people are sitting at home for a holiday.

You'd be surprised how less invested the players are for a bowl game. They love the experience, but they treat it like the exhibition that it is.

I think the most valuable aspect of becoming bowl eligible is the extra month of practice for the young guys on the team to prepare them for an increase in playing time next year.

It's the least meaningful game on our schedule. That's not debatable.

Narrative is quickly approaching the level of "physicality" as an over used douchy attempt at appearing intellectual when talking about sports

The argument was never that bowl games are meaningless. The argument is that the non-playoff bowls are meaningless exhibition games to high-profile draft picks when looked at from a purely financial standpoint.

which happens regardless of the outcome of the bowl. hence "meaningless".

Let's debate then.

What loss is the least impactful - the 12 regular season games or a non-playoff bowl game?

i would also argue that the outcome of the bowl is meaningless to the overall direction of the program.

"no recruit is going to go... they went to tempe... AND LOST?!! frick that i'm going elsewhere."

What meaning does a season hold if you don’t make the Sec champ or playoffs then?

I actually think you make a good point now that I’m thinking about it.

It’s a bit circular though because every loss means a worse bowl game, a game I put more value in than you do.
