I agree with this. You can get him a nice one and take it to a trophy shop to get his name and the date put on the blade for a couple dollars. Then buy a 12-pack of cheap ones for him to lose for the next couple years until he gets the hang of not losing them.
I'm almost 40 and go through about 2 per year due to losing them. I usually find them right after I buy a new one though.
