Is everybody (anybody) aware that an American is one win away from World Chess champion?

Fabiano Caruana would be the first American champion since Bobby Fischer in 1972. And if you're not old enough to remember that was a big deal back then.

He won't win, unfortunately. Magnus is wayyyy better at Blitz.

How close are you to winning the award for being a creepy weirdo?

He may or may not have the title 6 years running.

Sounds like an anchor baby to me.

Yeah Caruana is great but Magnus just seems to be on a different level. Like Rain Man and Fischer had a baby that was adopted by a stockfish engine.

Levitsky versus Marshall is a famous game of chess played by Stepan Levitsky and Frank Marshall. It was played in Breslau (now Wroclaw) on July 20, 1912, during the master's tournament of the DSB Congress. Legend has it that after Marshall's winning last move of the game, gold coins were tossed onto the board by spectators

23... Qg3!!!

Black moves his queen to where it is attacked by White's own queen and two pawns. Black threatens Qxh2#, but all three ways of capturing the queen lose, and other escape attempts fail as well:
any move by White's rook on f1 loses to 24...Qxh2+ 25.Kf1 Qh1#?;
24.f4 (or 24.f3) Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Qxh2#?;
24.hxg3 Ne2#?;
24.fxg3 Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Rxf1# (a back-rank mate);
24.Qxg3 Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Nxg3+ 26.Kg1 (if 26.fxg3 Rxf1#) Nxf1 27.gxh3 Nd2, and Black will keep his extra piece.
Levitsky resigned

The chess world is stunned right now.
Carlsen had what most experts considered a winning position in game 12 with black, and thus the championship... but offered a draw which Caruana wisely accepted.
Yes, the current champion has supreme confidence in the tiebreak format.

Do you have any thoughts of your own on this or are you just going to regurgitate what other, smarter, more capable people have said?

Doesn’t sound like an America to me

No clue. Crazy how things change. When chess was a big deal. Ha

I’d think the Cold War magnified he victory. Still very cool though.
