No

No, the TMV of his guarantee was a factor in his negotiations. He added the payout to his potential earnings from Kansas to be sure that he gained more wealth by accepting the settlement and new contract.

I'd like to think that even Alleva wouldn't be dumb enough to pay a million five to Les for no reason but after reading the article I now have my doubts.

Deals can fall through. LSU at the time did the right thing. They were thrilled miles was ready to deal. I honestly thought he wasn’t going to get another job so LSU went safe and locked in a 5m gain at the time.

Eh It’s easy to say Les has to mitigate, but I dont Think that means he has to take any job that is thrown his way.
I mean... Kansas sucks.
I think He could argue he was in good faith turning down a shitty
Job.

Miles could have taken a minimal salary from Kansas and LSU would have been on the hook for the balance. Or he could have not taken the job and worked hard at going to the mailbox every two weeks to collect his check. This is a great deal for both sides.
The one left holding the bag is Kansas, who might have gotten him for a bargain basement price under the first scenario.

What a stupid article.

There was no reason for a settlement to even be discussed before he signed his new deal. Looks like Kansas would of paid off the balance during his remaining term.

I really don’t understand all of the concern over this deal. The athletic department made a risk/reward decision based on the remaining $6.5MM obligation.
Think of it this way.. if you are the AD and you feel there is a 50% chance of Mikes taking a job that would mitigate the remaining buyout, how much money would you be willing to part with to wipe the slate clean? You probably wouldn’t pay him half of the remaining contract value (~$3.3MM) due to the time value of money. What about $2.5MM? Surely you would do it for $500k if that were an option.
Now what about if you think there’s a 75% chance he takes a job that mitigates the rest of the buyout? 25% of his remaining contract value is about $1.6MM, would that be small enough that it’s worth it to eliminate the risk?
I’m not trying to point to a specific dollar value and say “here’s what LSU should have paid” as much as I’m trying to point out that there IS a dollar value that makes sense for both sides. The rest is just negotiation.
ETA: And those of you saying we should have waited until the Kansas deal was done are missing the point of this agreement entirely. Because at that point if Les DOESN’T come to a deal with Kansas he’s walking away from the table and collecting the rest of his $6.5MM. Again, risk/reward.

So your theory is the same agent that dry stuck Alleva for $1.5M, would have negotiated a shitty contract? What LSU was paying Miles would have no effect in negotiations. Agent would have told Kansas apples and oranges.

What would Miles’ salary had been at Kansas had he not settled with LSU? That’s really the only way to know if anyone won or lost and by how much.
LSU could have accused Les of negotiating his Kansas contract in bad faith if the salary was interpreted as being below market value.

quote:no. you people need to stop with this contract ignorance. If he took less than his reasonable value, LSU could sue, would sue and would win. Just like he can't work for Kansas for free, he can't go cheap.

LSU would have been obligated to make up any difference. If Miles wanted to stick LSU he could have told Kansas he'd coach for a dollar a year and LSU would still be paying the buyout. That's an extreme example and there may be a bad faith clause in his buyout to prevent egregiousness like that, but he could easily have lowballed Kansas, offered to work below his fair market value and made LSU come up with the balance.

Say Miles agrees to work for 1.5 million. It would be really hard for LSU to prove he should have gotten 2 million.

Dameyune Craig was paid $8.10 per hour for a year at Florida State. His previous school paid his full salary minus the $8.10 per hour.

Former LSU and Auburn wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig is set to make just $8.10 an hour as a quality control specialist and offensive analyst at Florida State. This is according to a report by Noles247.com.
According to The Advocate, Craig had a base salary of $550,000 in 2016. He was also eligible to make $75,000 in incentive pay. AL.com reports he is set to make $575,000 in a contract buyout from his former program.

Sorry guys LSU got played here. Once again, Les and his master agent beat LSU in a negotiation.

How much do you think LSU should have paid to get out from under the contract?

Everyone thinks this is just a math problem.
Nobody actually thinks how his buyout affected
1) how Miles entered any negotiation
2) how any potential employer entered any negotiation (eg; lowball)
3) how likely or unlikely it was for Miles to accept any offer
It's maddening that an actual football journalist (to be fair, it is just football scoop) can't think in 3 dimensions.
I expect it from the Rant.
